Multi-read content how to remove radiator cover

On average, Britons spend 92% of their time indoors. This number is significantly higher in winter.

Radiators that aren’t cleaned regularly accumulate dust and debris, increasing cases of respiratory infections, asthma, and allergies due to poor indoor air quality.

The buildup of lint and other particles also shortens the life of the heater and can pose a fire hazard.

To clean your radiator, you must first remove the cover to access the slats where dust and other particles accumulate. No more running the toothbrush through the grill. Here’s how to remove the radiator cap to clean it

How to remove the radiator cap?

how to remove radiator cover

Most radiators have the same construction. With two panels on each side, each can be taken apart to access the mesh panels. Side panels have a button at the top, bottom or both. Remove plates;

  1. Push the right panel up from the bottom while pulling from the top.
  2. Repeat this process on the left panel.
  3. The grille cover should come off easily now.

However, other radiators have a single panel that contains the grille panels. There are two models of single board radiators.

The first type is one in which the grooves do not go all the way to the back of the radiator. This type is quite easy to open and simple. You may need to use a screwdriver on the bottom of the card to open the hinge. Once done, you can easily lift the top rack.

The second type is where the metal plate completely surrounds the back of the radiator.

Most of them have a clip on the back that dips into the grille and connects at the end with a spring clip. To access the grid;

  1. Use a long screwdriver to release this spring clip and while it’s there screw the screwdriver between the grille and the radiator to loosen it up a bit.
  2. With the screwdriver in place, go back to the side with the knob and pull it out with another screwdriver until the plastic pieces come loose.
  3. Now open both sides and feel free to use your screwdriver where it feels a bit stiff, being careful not to damage anything.

How to clean a radiator?

After removing the radiator cap, you can easily clean it thoroughly.

You can use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarser debris.

Then use the radiator cleaning brush to go over all the slats. These brushes are specially designed not to scratch the radiator and are long and narrow to reach the bottom of the radiator.

You can also useradiator brushto clean the back of the radiator.

Use a soft microfiber cloth dipped in warm soapy water to clean the exterior of the heater.

Can you pour water on your radiator?

The short answer is no.

Pouring water into the radiator can damage critical radiator components. However, you can use a spray bottle to dampen the dust and keep it from flying. This only happens if your radiator is open at the bottom.

Can you clean your radiator without removing the top?

Most heater manufacturers require you to remove the top before cleaning. This is because most grille covers have tight spaces that make it nearly impossible to properly clean with a brush.

For thorough cleaning, you must remove the cover.
