Multi-read content how to take care of peace lilies

Lily (Spathiphyllum), also known as a wardrobe tree, is a popular choice for offices and homes. As far as indoor plants go, lilies are among the easiest to care for. However, although peace lily care is easy, good growing conditions are still very important. Let’s see how to take care of peace lilies.

Growing Peace Lilies as Houseplants

Lilies are excellent plants for the home or office. These lovely plants not only brighten up the living space but also have great air purifying abilities for the room they are in. Usually these plants have dark green leaves and white “flowers”. What most people think of a flower is actually a specialized bract that grows out of the flower.

Like many popular houseplants, lilies prefer medium to low light. The type of light you need to provide will depend more on how you want your lily plants to look. Peace lilies placed in more light tend to produce beautiful white flowers and more blooms, while peace lilies in low light will bloom less and look like a traditional foliage plant.

Caring for the Peace Lily

One of the most common mistakes when caring for lilies is overwatering. Lilies are more tolerant of overwatering, which is one of the most common reasons lilies die. It is for this reason that you should never water your water lily on a schedule. Instead, you should check them once a week to see if they need watering. Just touch the top of the soil to see if it dries. If so, water your peace lily. If the soil is still moist, the plant does not need to be watered. Some people will go so far as to wait until their water lily begins to sag before watering it. Since these plants are very drought tolerant, this method is not harmful to the plants and will prevent overwatering.

Lilies do not need frequent fertilizing. A balanced fertilizer once or twice a year will be enough to keep the plant healthy.

Peace lilies also benefit from repotting or dividing as they grow taller than their containers. Signs that a lily plant has outgrown its container include plants drooping less than a week after watering and deformed, crowded leaves. If you arerepotting, transfer the plant to a pot at least 2 inches (5 cm) larger than the current pot. If you are dividing, use a sharp knife to cut down the center of the roots and replant each half in the container on the plant.

Since the broad leaves of peace lilies tend to attract dust, you shouldwashing or wiping the leavesat least once a year. This will help it handle sunlight better. You can wash the plant by placing it in a tub and giving it a quick soak, or by placing the plant in the tub and letting the hose run over the leaves. Alternatively, you can also wipe the leaves of the peace lily with a damp cloth. However, avoid using commercial leaf polishes as they can clog the pores of the plant.
