Commercial greenhouse. For home gardeners, gardeners and gardening enthusiasts, greenhouses are spaces to relax and pursue their hobbies. However, a greenhouse means more than that to professional growers.

Steel Construction Commercial Greenhouse

greenhouse steel frame, Whereproducer, are free-standing structures used to plant trees and vegetation for commercial or recreational purposes. Usually covered in glass or some other transparent material, thesesteel structureDetached from main buildings in most cases, but can be attached if needed.

The goal ofsteel buildingGreenhouse is to provide the ideal conditions for the growth of specific plants. This is achieved by controlling factors that affect plant growth, such as humidity and temperature within the perimeter of the greenhouse.

Commercial greenhouses: why do you need them?

A commercial greenhouse is a space used for growing plants on a large scale for commercial purposes. If you’re new to this field, you’re probably familiar with the debate between greenhouse and open-field farming. While the concept of controlled indoor gardening has been around for centuries, most commercial establishments have followed conventional open-field farming methods for crops throughout history. .

However, shifting cultivation carries a multitude of risks, as it depends on a number of unpredictable factors. These include rapid climate change, pest infestation, soil erosion and more. Keeping track of these factors and making sure the school is completely problem-free can be a difficult task. Even if you keep a close eye on your fields, some aspects of conventional farming cannot be controlled.

Another reason why open field farming is an unfavorable choice is that there is not much you can do to improve yields and generate more profits. This is why modern farmers and professional growers have turned to greenhouses. These spaces are created to increase income by allowing plants to grow in a modified environment for optimal yield.

301021-Draper-Valley-Farms-Grow-Vinyard-60x200-Gray-Color-TBD-Selma-OR-UnitedStatesCurrently, there are over 8,000 greenhouse vegetable farms in the United States. theUnited States Agriculture Census Reportalso pointed out that the number of greenhouses in the country has increased sharply, estimated at 115% over the past seven years. Greenhouses are also dominating the agricultural and horticultural landscape globally, as the value of the global commercial greenhouse market is expected togrow to $30 billion by 2023.

Some have linked this rapid change in agricultural trends to global warming and climate change, as a result of which arable land per capita has declined in recent years. However, the root cause of this shift in farming trends is the power of customization and control that comes with commercial greenhouses.

Choosing a greenhouse for commercial growing gives you more control over the growth of your crops. You can manage irrigation, temperature, humidity, and even adjust the amount of light your plants are exposed to, to transform your indoor space into the ideal environment for plant growth. Advances in technology have also allowed experts to adjust carbon dioxide levels within the structure, so that photosynthesis is at its peak.

Enhance your greenhouse

Commercial Greenhouses: Cost Considerations

Despite the many advantages of greenhouses, most commercial growers are hesitant to switch from open-field to indoor controlled agriculture, mainly due to the large investment required for commercial greenhouses.

Since these structures allow better control of the factors important for optimal growth, their installation, operation and maintenance costs are much higher than in open field agriculture. Typical mid-size commercial greenhouses are available for around $25 per square foot**. This means that a full-scale commercial greenhouse of 1,000 square feet or more should cost close to $25,000 or more. For those with limited capital, costs pose a challenge.**Note: Fluctuations in steel prices due to supply chain issues, raw material costs and consumer demand can have a significant impact on mill costs.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to stretch your budget to move your operations to a greenhouse. Not all greenhouses are expensive and there are a number of cost-effective options that can be considered by businesses with financial constraints.

Factors that affect the cost of your commercial greenhouse

  • Mandatory field
  • Construction materials
  • framed
  • Control the environment

The cost of a commercial greenhouse is determined based on a number of factors, all of which can be tailored to your needs. Before you can do that, you’ll need to research each of these factors thoroughly to ensure that you end up paying for a model that meets all your requirements and is also in the right place in your budget.

Mandatory field

The required area of your greenhouse mainly depends on the amount of yield you expect from your project. Most commercial growers or companies prefer a higher yield. However, since greenhouses take up more space and require more materials, they tend to be more expensive. So if you are short on capital, choosing the largest greenhouse available may not be the most viable option.

In terms of area, commercial greenhouses can be divided into the following categories:

Small Scale Unit 6×8

The 6×8 small scale greenhouse is basically a tent or awning, constructed of transparent fabric and plastic. These compact devices are mainly used by amateurs in the garden and are not entirely suitable for professionals, as the blockage does not allow them to incorporate the additional features and equipment necessary for successful commercial cultivation. These units can cost between $240 and $250*.

Medium scale 12 × 12 units

Mid-size 12×12 units are the perfect choice for experienced growers who know how to maximize space for optimum yield. Unlike 6x8s, these apartments have glass or polycarbonate walls as well as a solid foundation laid by leveling floors and running electrical and plumbing lines. The average cost of these units is between $3,500 and $7,000*.

Steel building frameLarge Scale Unit

Commercial greenhouses that cover more than 50 feet of land are considered large-scale units. Most large modern apartments are equipped with several amenities, such as automatic sprinkler systems, humidifiers, pest control sprayers, built-in drainage systems, and more. Their average cost ranges from $13,000 to $25,000*.

Construction materials

When budgets are tight, most individuals try to reduce the factors by compromising on the type and quality of greenhouse building materials, as it is generally believed that these materials play no significant role in plant growth. However, nothing could be further from the truth!

The materials used in the construction of your commercial greenhouse are the main factors that determine the life of the structure and its maintenance costs. The quality of your crops is also affected by the building materials you choose, especially those used for the greenhouse walls and roof.

Below is a breakdown of the different building materials listed with their pros and cons and average costs, to help you decide which is best for your functional and financial needs.

Polyethylene

Polyethylene is often used in small-scale structures. Usually priced at just $0.12* per square foot, it’s one of the most cost-effective building materials available. The flexibility of the membrane facilitates its installation. On the other hand, the maintenance of the film is somewhat difficult.

The plastic should be punctured regularly and checked regularly for punctures. If a puncture is detected, it can be repaired using patches and tape. In the event that the film is torn or punctured with numerous spots, you will need to replace the film with a new one.

glass cup

Since plants use heat as fuel for photosynthesis, materials with high thermal conductivity, such as glass, are ideal for building greenhouses. When sunlight hits the glass surface, solar energy is converted to infrared energy, which then increases the temperature inside the structure and allows plants to thrive. The only downside to using glass is that it cannot withstand extreme weather conditions and can crack or break under heavy pressure, allowing accumulated heat to escape, destabilizing the external environment. Glass used in greenhouses typically costs around $2.50* per square foot.

polycarbonate

In essence, polycarbonate is plastic. However, it is far superior to the average of polyethylene films and glass, especially in terms of strength and durability. The material is transparent like glass, but has better insulation and is at least 250 times more impact resistant than safety glass.

Able to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds, or any other unusual environmental changes, polycarbonate is definitely a great alternative to glass. Currently, a sheet of 8×4 material sells for $55*.

framed

The frame of a greenhouse is essentially its backbone, as it supports the entire structure. If the chosen material is not able to withstand extreme conditions, your greenhouse may collapse unexpectedly. This can put your employees at risk of accidents and injuries and can also increase the likelihood of losing money.

Wood

Lumber, which typically costs $1* per linear foot, is the cheapest and most readily available framing material. It is widely used in residential greenhouses due to its aesthetics. However, not all types of wood are suitable for commercial greenhouses.

High humidity in the greenhouse negatively affects the integrity of the wooden frame, causing it to rot from the inside. Wood is also more susceptible to pests and diseases, which is not only very inconvenient, but can also damage your product and waste valuable resources.

Therefore, wood, while cost effective and relatively easier to size and assemble, may not be the most appropriate choice of framing material.

pvc pipe

PVC is another material that is economical, light and easy to handle. It may not be as strong as a metal frame, but it’s definitely more corrosion resistant than wood and can last up to 20 years with UV protection. A 1.5 inch diameter PVC pipe can cost up to $0.2* per linear foot.

301089-Virginia-Distillery-70x210-Spirits-Polar-White-Lovingston-VA-United-States-6Steel

Commercial greenhouse withsteel frameshould be the first choice for those who prioritize durability and certainty. These frames are durable, low maintenance and can withstand adverse conditions. Steel houses are available at $7-$12* per square foot.

Enhance your greenhouse

Control the environment

Each plant needs a very specific environment to thrive. These conditions can be created artificially in a greenhouse, but the degree of environmental control varies for each type of greenhouse. The level of control also plays an important role in determining the total cost of the greenhouse.

HVAC system

The HVAC system allows you to control the heat and air levels in the greenhouse and change the conditions to your liking. They can be installed as a single unit or you can split the HVAC system into three separate components.

An HVAC system capable of maintaining the internal temperature and humidity levels of a $16,000* greenhouse can go up to $5,000* or more, depending on its features and performance.

If you opt for an HVAC, you might consider boilers to provide heat. These boilers can be fired with natural gas, but can also run on electricity, depending on the flexibility of your budget. The oven must also be cleaned every year, which increases maintenance costs. To keep costs to a minimum, compare the unit prices of fuel options and the reliability of the fuel source before choosing a heating system for your commercial greenhouse.

For cooling and ventilation, consider adding small horizontal airflow (HAF) fans. Fans cost between $100 and $150* and can effectively eliminate hot spots in your greenhouse if placed in the right places.

Lighting

Like field crops, greenhouse plants use sunlight as a source of heat and energy. However, daily weather conditions are not always favorable for plant growth. On overcast or cloudy days, it can be difficult for your plants to get the amount of light they need to thrive. This is why your greenhouse will need grow lights.

Grow lights can cost between $30 and $130*. The cost of each bulb depends on how much electricity it consumes and how much power it can produce. Some lamps also require a specialized fixture and ballast, which can further increase their installation costs.

Thermostats and sensors

Thermostats and sensors are used to monitor (and in some cases control) environmental conditions in the greenhouse. Mechanical thermostats are cheap but are not able to provide accurate results, which is why they are obsolete.

Electronic thermostats are now widely used in most commercial greenhouses. They not only allow growers to check indoor atmosphere parameters, but can also be integrated with heating and cooling systems to maintain indoor temperature at a preset level. Some electronic thermostats are also equipped with light sensors, allowing them to distinguish between day and night and make changes accordingly.

You can buy an electronic thermostat for an average cost of $600*, but prices can also go up to $1,500* for a more functional thermostat.

Conclusion

The commercial greenhouse market in the United States and around the world is growing at an incredible rate. The exponential growth domestically and internationally is primarily due to the ability of commercial greenhouses to deliver higher yields than conventional agricultural development vehicles. As climate change reduces the total area of arable land, more and more farmers and gardeners are turning to commercial greenhouses and using them as an alternative to open-field farming.

However, building a commercial greenhouse is a complex process that requires careful planning. Since the installation and maintenance of commercial greenhouses depends on many factors, it is difficult to determine the exact price of these structures. The overall cost of your project can also fluctuate depending on your needs and preferences.

To control costs, the size of your greenhouse and the fittings installed in it, as well as the construction materials used for the frame and the siding, should be chosen after conducting thorough research into the advantages and disadvantages of each factor. .

In addition to construction and installation costs, commercial greenhouses also require a fair amount of capital to operate. These operating costs should also be considered when choosing a commercial greenhouse or any part of it to perform a cost analysis and determine if you are financially ready for the investment.

In order to make an informed decision, be sure to request an appropriate quote on the materials, equipment and services you will need for the construction of your commercial greenhouse.

What does a greenhouse cost? A DIY greenhouse can be as little as a few hundred dollars, while a kit starts at a few thousand dollars. But the kit is not the only cost associated with the greenhouse. My greenhouse kit ended up being less than half the total amount I spent. All this to grow some winter vegetables! I definitely still think it was worth it, but I wanted to share the true cost of a greenhouse if you want to have a winter garden and you don’t want to go beyond cold frames or hoop houses.
