Multi-read content how to wash a house before painting

How often do you need to paint the exterior of your home in the UK?

Let’s start with the basics and establish the ideal painting frequency for the elevation of your home. Much depends on the climate and weather conditions you live in.

If you consider Cambridgeshire you will get 1495 hours of sunshine per year which is also the UK average. It’s not the highest and even without that stat, we all know our climate is quite humid.

In conditions like the UK you should paint the exterior of your house every 7-10 years.

This is if the previous paint job was done correctly. What does it mean? It consists of good quality paint, done in good weather and well prepared surfaces.

Painting may be needed sooner than that if you haven’t encountered any of the above or live in one of the big bustling cities.

How Often do You Need to Paint the Exterior of Your House in UK

One of the reasons why you shouldn’t wait too long to repaint your home is that peeling or peeling paint makes surface prep much more difficult and time consuming.

Painting frequency can also vary depending on the surface or finishing materials used on your home’s elevation.

  • It is recommended to paint the aluminum siding approximately every 5 years
  • Wood siding should be painted every three to six years or stained every four years
  • Mortar typically lasts about five years without repainting
  • The tiles can last fifteen or even twenty years if painted, otherwise they only need to be cleaned once in the long run
  • New materials such as fiber cement shingles can last ten to fifteen years between paint jobs

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it’s quite a lively discussion, especially online. There are those who think it’s absolutely necessary and those who think it shouldn’t be done at all.

The only correct answer is not perfect and both solutions have their pros and cons.

As a result, you cannot choose one right and the other not. There are also other factors that play a big role in this game. Therefore, we wanted to go through some of them and try to make your decision at least a little easier.

Reasons to use pressure washing

  • Provides a very thorough cleaning
  • Remove mildew, moss, grease and dirt from traffic
  • Easily removes chipped and peeling paint
  • Work went pretty quickly

Reasons NOT to use pressure washing

  • Can damage pieces of wood
  • Can destroy a lot of paint and cause the surrounding area to explode
  • Let the water inside the walls
  • Can remove grout between bricks and damage your old bricks

As you can see, it’s not that simple.

There are quite a few good reasons to do this, but you have to agree that there are also very few reasons why it shouldn’t be done. Perhaps the most important thing is that this solution can leave water inside the walls. It’s especially dangerous if you have your back. Why?

Because the partitions are designed to protect your house from water falling from above, at least more or less. While pressure washing is usually done from the bottom.

And it can go until it’s somewhere at eye level, but anything higher than eye level almost certainly has water getting inside and behind the baffle.

Another type of wall that deserves special attention is the brick wall.

In specifically the old ones, like many there in Cambridge. You have to remember that these tools shoot water at 1500 psi or more, so you have to be very careful not to damage your walls.

repair costs andReplacing tiles can far exceed the cost of pressure washing. Also, you need to give the wall more time to dry before painting.

It’s hard to say exactly how long you’ll have to wait to paint the walls, but expect at least five to seven days in good weather. Even longer for wood.

In general, you should not wait more than a month so that you do not have to wash again.
