Please Note: All documents/applications must be completed to maintain the date of baptism at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
We ask parents to pick up all materials from home and bring them to the parish office when they are ready to discuss baptism dates and make reservations.

Member request to parents:

  • Be a registered member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish or
  • Provide a letter of authorization from your current parish.

Parental baptism course:

  • Attend a parent baptism class at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish or
  • Provide a letter of attendance for classes in another parish.

Birth certificate
As part of the preparation for baptism, it is necessary to bring your child’s original birth certificate to the parish office.
We will make copies of this document and consider any other requirements necessary for baptism at that time.

Older children (grades 1 and 2 only)
please call770-432-8579 ext. 101for information on their preparation for baptism.
Children in grades 1 and 2 will be invited to attend a Baptist class specially designed for children their age.
Parents must attend a baptismal class, and godparents must comply with all requirements established by the Archdiocese of Atlanta, as noted above.

Older children (3rd to 8th grade)
Please contact the Director of the Religious Education Department at770-432-8579 ext. 112for information on their preparation for baptism.

Baptism authorized elsewhere:
Call or stop by the parish office to provide the necessary information:

  • Date of parent baptism class or proof of attendance if you attended another parish
  • Child’s name
  • Name of the parish where the baptism will take place
  • City, state of this parish
  • baptism day
  • FAX NUMBER
  • Name of contact person at this parish

Godfather:

  • It is acceptable to choose only one sponsor for your child; however, one must be an active and practicing Catholic. This sponsor must meet the following criteria:
  • 16 and over
    Be a full Catholic (one who has received the sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation) and
    Married by the Church or single
  • If you want two godparents, Cannon Law requires a man and a woman. Of the two godparents, at least one must be an active, participating Catholic who meets the requirements listed above. Another sponsor could be a Christian.
  • If both godparents are Catholic, they must comply with the requirements listed above.
  • Your Catholic sponsor (or sponsor, if both are Catholic), must be a registered member of St. Thomas or
  • Provide a certificate of sponsorship (letter of good standing) from the parish of which they are a member.
  • The sponsorship certificate, along with any other supporting documentation (eg church marriage certificate) should be mailed to the parents and then brought to the parish office.
  • The godparents usually come from out of town. If they cannot be present on the day of Baptism, they can be represented by an authorized person. The authorized person can be a family member, friend or parishioner who will act on behalf of your official godparents on the day of the baptism.

Expenses:

  • On this joyful occasion, we strongly encourage you to make a financial donation to the parish in thanksgiving for the gift of Baptism to your child. A generous donation to God would be appropriate and greatly appreciated.
  • Please prepare your donation in advance by placing it in an envelope with the name of the child to be baptized and the date of the baptism on the outside. Please give it to the priest or deacon after the baptism. Don’t forget to get your child’s baptismal certificate at this time.
  • If the offering is a check, please forward it to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. This offering will be recorded in the parish donation register.

Adoption:

  • If your child was adopted, an adoption order must be submitted, which includes the name of the court that ordered the adoption and the date it was ordered. A copy will be made.

Arriving time:

  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes in advance on the day of the baptism to obtain instructions for attending the ceremony. Find the Minister of Hospitality (wearing the badge) or wait for instructions in the common area (lobby) of the church.
