Cheap plastic water lines and saddle valves sold for ice machines can eventually clog or leak, causing water damage.

You can replace your plastic water line with a copper fitting, high quality circuit breaker and braided steel power wire in half an hour – and never have to worry about a leak again. Braided steel is a hardened, non-corrugated steel alternative to 1/4-in. copper or plastic.

Turn off the water supply to the house and drain the water from the entire system. Remove the saddle valve and cut the copper underneath (Photo 1). You may need to cut more, depending on the emissions from the water line, to make room for the repair fitting and additional copper if needed.

Remove the circuit breaker trim nut and remove the handle and core before welding. Shake the water lines to get all the water out, then clean and smooth the fittings and solder everything together (Photo 2).

Allow the tube to cool for a few minutes, then reinstall the stop handle. Shut off and turn on the water in the house to check for leaks. Attach the braided water (image 3), then run the water through a bucket or sink for a few minutes to remove any corrosion or welds. Finally, run the water line through the floor or the wall at the back of the refrigerator (image 4).
