Multi-read content how to redo a chair

This upholstered guest guide explains how to reupholster a fabric dining chair on the seat and back. It was sent by one ofcontributors,Charlie Miller.

Scroll down if you want the instructions to be printable.

I inherited old furniture from my grandparents.

I have this formal looking dining chair – could it be called the Carver chair? – For many years now.

I still plan to pack it and repack it but it took me a while to finish it. It’s the week!

Materials Used – Antique Upholstered Dining Chairs:

  • Old dining chair with seat cushion, backrest and armrests.
  • Padding (mine is one)
  • Art Deco designs buy online
  • )
  • Seat cover pin puller and/or zipper assembly
  • Mattress
  • Old socks (optional)
  • 60 grit sandpaper
  • (optional)
  • stapler and stapler
  • exact knife
  • Decorative nail wrap
  • Enveloping Hammer
  • fabric scissors

Step 1: Remove old upholstery

how to reupholster a dining room chair seat and backPhoto: Charlie Miller

The first thing I did when reupholstering my dining chair was to remove the old fabric by pulling out the nails and pins.

I have a good staple remover but it still takes me a long time because they stay in there for a long time!

how to reupholster a dining room chair seat and backPhoto: Charlie Miller

I followed the advice of apacking instructionson this site it says it’s best to keep the old fabric when you remove it so you can use it as a template for your chair.

If you think about it, someone did the measurement a long time ago and calculated the size of the piece of fabric and how the corners should be cut – so it makes sense for you to just trace the old piece of fabric when cutting her new piece of fabric. cloth!

I also removed the old padding at this point.

Step 2: Handrails

armchair armrests made of wood - reupholstery proejctPhoto: Charlie Miller

When I removed the fabric from the arms of this old chair, I discovered that there were wooden blocks attached to the arms of this chair that looked like they were added after it was made.

They were probably added the last time it was restored in the 1950s – most likely by my grandfather!

The previous fabric on the handrails had suffered a lot of wear in the corners of these wood pieces, so I decided to use 60 grit sandpaper to sand the corners of these sharp rectangles.

Step 3: New Upholstery

New “creative” padding for the armrest

I knew before starting this project that I wanted some extra padding on the armrests as they always feel a little hard to me – that would be the hardwood block underneath!

I pinned some new pads, but it didn’t feel “smooth” enough, so I added some old (but freshly washed!) socks.

I cut the socks into rectangular pieces that fit the wooden blocks. Turns out they were just the right size for what I needed!

I put another layer of cotton padding over the socks.

New seat and back cushions

For the seat and back, I removed the old cushion and replaced it with a new pressed cotton mattress. I go so thick that I feel like I can go with it and end up adding a few more layers.

I pinned it in place following the existing pin line for the old seat pad.

Once all the padding was in place, I trimmed the excess padding around the edges with a precision knife (British craft knife).

Step 4: Cover the Seat and Backrest

Art Deco upholstery fabric

I chose a dark blue and white colorArtistic decorationcloth. My apartment is mostly gray, teal, and blue, so it fits in perfectly.

I am based in Vancouver, Canada and ordered this fabric fromZazzle online.

You can buy fabric in a variety of weights. I chose poplin which is probably a bit too thin. If I had to do it again, I would use combed cotton or linen.

Are there similar ones?Art Deco fabrics are also available on Etsy here.If you are not sure which upholstery fabric is right for you, you can also consult this guide which will help youChoose which upholstery fabric to use and when.

I prefer to leave the wood as is rather than paint it as it is in good condition (besides my grandfather is not a fan ofpainted wood furniture!).

I decided to go for a fabric that really shines and stands out so it still looks more modern even with the wood finish.

When I started, I pinned the fabric and trimmed the excess like with the spacer, but that caused the fabric to pull. So I started folding the bottom edge and pinning it to the frame.

I pinned to the same points/lines as the previous pin items.

Tip: Take care to align the fabric and place the pin in the center lines on each side first, then pin along the edges.

Step 5: Add decoration

Once you’ve secured your upholstery, you’ll still have a visible metal line, so this needs to be covered with some detail.

There are many different types on the market – I chose hammer nail decoration.

These studs come in long rolls. Every fourth or fifth rivet contains the whole thing and you also get a bunch of loose studs with spikes at the end. These go through the holes and you smack the entire strip right at these points.

Rivet strips cut and bend easily, so they are quick and easy to work with.

You just need to measure, cut, place it on your wire and use a hammer to hammer in the studs that have nails/thorns on them.

Step 6: Wrap the underside of the recliner.

My final step was to cover the underside of the recliner.

I actually decided to add more padding at this point, so I tucked it under the spring and flattened it.

I used fabric that I removed from the seat (one piece at best) and added it to cover the underside.

I think it’s a little “added”upcycle’and also a way to keep some of the history of the chair!

I’m very happy with how it turned out!

Obviously, I’m looking forward to reclaiming such a legacy. The new fabric fits so much better with my interior design and I think my grandparents will be so happy that I keep their sofa in the family too!
