Multi-read content what setting do you wash blankets on

While there are certain types of blankets, like down comforters, that you can throw in the washing machine, there are others that need to be hand washed, dry cleaned, or laundered in place. Material and weave primarily affect how you clean the blanket.

Whether you’re dealing with household chores or have an accident with one of your beautiful blankets, you’ll find your answer here in our “How To” collection.

When cleaning blankets, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions before trying anything else. The care instructions will guide you on the best way to clean the cover without damaging the product.

If you do not have access to the original manufacturer’s care instructions, you can follow the best practices outlined below.

How to hand wash your blanket

Using a washing machine makes it easier to clean the blankets; However, throwing them in the washing machine sometimes will ruin your beautiful blanket. For such occasions, follow the instructions below to wash your hands.

  1. Fill a plastic bucket with cold water and add liquid detergent. Make sure the water and soap are well mixed.
  2. Dip the fabric under water and knead the fabric piece by piece.
  3. Once the fabric has been thoroughly cleaned, remove the cover and press out excess water without wringing the fabric as this will cause the cover to shrink.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 with clean water until no traces of soap remain.
  5. After squeezing all the water out of the fabric, place the fabric between two dry towels to soak up all the water. This will speed up the drying process.
  6. Then hang to dry to keep its shape.

How to wash fleece blankets

Fleece blankets are made of a fabric that can be said from time to time to be of high quality. Poor quality fleece flakes off, losing its soft, seductive feel; meanwhile, the high-quality or ultra-plush fleece does not clump and stays soft for a very long time.

Either way, the method below will help keep your fleece blanket soft for longer.

  1. Using the right amount of detergent, put it in the washing machine as usual: soap first, then a blanket.
  2. Wash in cold water on gentle cycle.
  3. During the rinse cycle, add liquid fabric softener.
  4. After washing, hang the blanket on the clothesline to dry. This will prevent clumping which often occurs in the dryer.

How to wash woolen blankets

Before washing a woolen blanket, make sure it’s not just dry cleaning. The biggest risk when cleaning your own wool blanket is shrinkage. In the next four steps, we’ll show you how to wash wool blankets without fear of damaging the fabric.

  1. Make sure your blanket is machine washable. If this is not the case, refer to the “Hand wash” section. If so, put a mild detergent in the bottom of the tub and then the fabric.
  2. Set the machine on a gentle cycle with cold water.
  3. Another minute is until the spin cycle, stop the machine so that the blanket does not stretch.
  4. Hang to dry on a wire rack. Putting wool in a heated dryer will cause the material to shrink.

How to wash blankets

Washing knitted blankets is similar to washing knitted blankets. Care should be taken not to stretch the yarn and distort the shape of the blanket. We recommend hand washing these blankets using the hand wash method.

However, if you want to wash woolen or knitted garments in the washing machine, we recommend placing the fabric in a cloth or garment bag before placing it in the machine. The bag will protect the cover.

Make sure the wash cycle is a gentle press cycle or a permanent press.

Lay the blanket flat and reshape the material after washing. Air drying is the best way to dry knit blankets. Although the drying time is longer, it will ensure that the fabric does not shrink.

How to Wash Sherpa Blankets

Sherpa blankets should be washed in a front-loading machine – or without a central agitator – with non-detergent soap. Detergents will damage the DWR – Durable Water Repellent – which protects your blanket from allergens.

Do not put your sherpa blanket in the dryer. Even low temperatures can damage or melt fabrics. We recommend that you dry the blanket thoroughly, but you can dry it on low heat to soften the material.

How to wash an electric blanket

Washing electric blankets can be tricky. Threads running through the fabric can be dangerous if not washed properly. In general, we recommend spot cleaning this blanket. If the electric blanket is a cheap $20 department store brand, you might consider buying a new one.

The electric blanket can cause a fire or give you an electric shock if the cord is not handled properly. However, some electric blankets are too expensive to remove at the end of each winter. If you have one of these covers, follow the instructions below to safely clean your cover.

  1. Before washing, unplug the cord – if you have a blanket that won’t separate from the blanket, make sure it’s not plugged in – and check all fabric cords to make sure none of them is torn.
  2. If the cover has a detachable cord, you can put the fabric in the washing machine and pre-soak it for 5-15 minutes. You can use cold or lukewarm water.
  3. If the blanket does not have a detachable cord, you will need to hand wash the fabric without wetting the control cord.
  4. Wash the removable drawstring cover in a wash that lasts no longer than 3 minutes in a gentle wash cycle with a mild detergent.
  5. The wash cycle should not last longer than 1 minute.
  6. Allow the blanket to dry for 5-10 minutes, then hang it to dry the other way around.

Older electric blankets do not have removable cords. For this reason, they present a problem when you need to clean them. You don’t want the control cords to get wet, and you want to mess up the blanket’s wires as little as possible.

  1. Soak the blanket in a bath of cold water mixed with a mild detergent for 15 minutes. Be careful not to immerse the power cord in water.
  2. Wring out the soapy water and rinse with cold water.
  3. Again, squeeze out the water and hang until dry.

How to wash weighted blankets

Wash aweighted blanketis not recommended. The protective cover that holds the core inside can tear and damage the washing machine.

Spot cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent will help keep your weighted blanket clean and recommended weekly.

Some weighted blankets have a cover that separates from the weighted portion of the blanket. You can immediately throw the cover in the wash like you would a bed sheet or pillowcase.

How to Wash Duvets, Comforters, and Oversized Duvets

The duvet has a removable cover that protects the duvet from dirt and is machine washable. However, duvets and blankets are too big to put in the washing machine.

While duvets should be taken to a dry cleaner to preserve their beauty and longevity, down duvets can be placed in a commercial machine at a nearby laundromat.

  1. The duvet should be washed on the gentle cycle in cold or lukewarm water, using a mild detergent.
  2. Dry the blanket on low heat with a few dryer balls or tennis balls. A blow dryer or tennis ball acts as an agitator and will soften the lint as it dries.

Clean your duvets and quilts to minimize laundry loads. This will extend the life of your blanket.

Tips and tricks for washing blankets

It is important to do your research before washing your blanket. While knowing the washing strategiesHigh quality coveris half the battle, a few helpful hints are the other half and will prolong your purchase.

How often should the blanket be washed?

As a general rule, a blanket should be washed every two weeks. Although blankets are consideredpart of basic bedding, they usually need minimal protection, like a bed sheet – they separate the skin from the blanket so they don’t get dirty quickly.

Don’t completely dry your blanket

As a general rule, do not completely dry your blanket. It will shrink. Some blankets will get stuck in the dryer, ruining the fabric design.

Check the blanket every 20 minutes and remove it from the dryer when it is approximately 80% dry.

Skip the fabric softener

Moderate use of fabric softener can make your blanket softer, fade resistant and drug resistant. However, there are risks associated with large hedges, especially withduvets and quilts. Liquids can be absorbed unevenly and cause splatter on fabric.

Did you find your answer?

If you want your beautiful blankets to last, you need to clean them instead of throwing them in the laundry. Hand washing and spot cleaning can help you avoid damage to the blanket and prolong its life. Keep in mind that most blankets only require a mild detergent and sometimes hanging to dry will help keep the material from stretching too far.

We are sure that if you follow the steps provided by this article, you will be able to wash your blankets and keep them looking their best.

Popular questions about what setting do you wash blankets on

what setting do you wash blankets on?

Place the blanket in your washer and run a cold, delicate cycle with your usual detergent. If your washer doesn’t have a gentle option, use the lowest spin setting. Avoid chlorine bleach, and skip any fabric softeners. Air-dry the blanket on a rack or clothesline.

How do you wash blankets in the washing machine?

Cleaning Steps:
  1. Pour the appropriate amount of laundry detergent into the washing machine for your blanket load.
  2. Place the blanket in the washing machine.
  3. Wash on the gentle cycle using cold water.
  4. During the rinse cycle, add the appropriate amount of liquid fabric softener.
  5. Hang the blanket and allow it to air-dry.

What setting to wash big blankets?

Use either cold or warm water, set the washer for the largest load capacity, and select the delicate or gentle cycle. Use slightly less than the suggested detergent amount—too much soap is difficult to remove and can leave excess suds in the comforter’s fibers.

What setting do you put blankets on in the dryer?

Set the dryer to a low heat setting.

When using a clothes dryer to dry your blanket, keep the heat setting between low and medium. Higher heats might shrink the blanket, or cause synthetic materials like polyester to scorch.

What temperature do you wash blankets?

Wash it in warm water, but no warmer than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a mild detergent, with no bleach or fabric softener, and do not wash with other textiles. Tumble dry on the lowest possible heat setting – again, no more than 120 degrees – and without other textiles or fabric softener present.

Do you wash comforters in hot or cold water?

Select the gentle or delicate cycle and add an extra rinse if possible. The label on your comforter may recommend a temperature setting. Cold or warm water will protect colors and fabrics, while hot water will kill dust mites if you don’t plan on machine drying.

How do you wash and dry fleece blankets?

It’s an abrasive cleanser and can also affect blanket dyes. Polyester fleece is naturally stain resistant, so just a teeny bit of soap and water and a light wash will do the trick. Machine wash blankets on cool + tumble dry low or no heat + keep the irons and bleach at bay = Soft Blankets Forever.

How often should you wash blankets?

about once per season
Blankets and comforters should be washed about once per season. Between washings, you can toss them in the dryer on high (or hot) for between 10 to 15 minutes to eradicate any critters. A lot of people never think about washing their pillows, but they should be laundered about once or twice per year.

How do you wash a blanket in a top loader?

Place the comforter into your washer carefully. If your top load washer has an agitator, place it loosely around the wash tub and try to keep the load balanced. Sheets and comforters are generally washed using a bulky cycle. However, if you wish to be gentler, a delicate cycle is sufficient.

Is it okay to put a soaking wet blanket in the dryer?

You should never put a soaking wet blanket in the dryer. The heavy blanket can easily damage your dryer, causing it to partially dry clothes, stop working, or even catch fire. However, you can drain off the excess water from the blanket before placing it in the dryer.

Can you put a wet blanket in the washing machine?

Very wet blankets should be put in the washer for the spin cycle to remove most of the water. Then they can go in the dryer. Dont put them in the dryer. Put them back in the washer and use Spin to remove the water.

How do you dry a blanket in the dryer?

Blankets: Put two or four dry towels into the dryer with the blanket and set the timer for 20-25 minutes. Do not set the control for more than 25 minutes. Dry only one blanket at a time. Remove the blanket at the end of the cycle and block the blanket back to its original shape.
