Multi-read content how to match patterns

Tired of plain, borrowed colors from your home? While all solids have their place, wouldn’t your interior be more fun if we added some whimsical patterns for added contrast and visual appeal? Yes! Mixing and matching patterns can often be a challenge, especially if you don’t know how to choose the right complementary colors and proportions to use with each other. Before you start choosing random samples, here are some tips that will point you in the right direction. Here are 10 easy ways to mix and match textures effortlessly throughout your home.

1. First determine your preferred color scheme:

ImageAndreas von Einsiedel/Getty

One of the challenges of mixing and matching designs is the ability to determine what will go well together and what will conflict. Before playing with a pattern, first choose a color palette that you like. When choosing colors, decide whether warmer or cooler colors will work best. Every color has its warm and cool sides, so choose one or two primary colors and consider one or two accent colors for a pop.

2. The easiest way: combine white with a swatch

One of the easiest ways to combine textures is to choose a monochrome texture with a white background. Whether you choose a monochromatic color scheme of white and black or decide to go for a maritime theme with navy blue and white, use your imagination when choosing a color scheme. Then introduce patterns in that color like stripes, polka dots, chevrons, bold prints, any print that makes a statement without being too dazzling on the eyes.

3. Let neutrals be your background when using large prints

Bold or large prints can be used stylishly when mixing and matching patterns. Another general rule is to start with neutral colors on walls and floors and use several layers of bold prints on your rug or in a few key pieces of furniture. Then fill your space with sofas, chairs in neutral colors and otters to neutralize the room. Bold textures work wonders with understated neutrals.

4. Use a variety of ratios when mixing and matching designs

When choosing textures in your interior, keep in mind that large-scale patterns can blend with smaller-scale prints as long as the palette stays within the same color family. Choose a dominant print from your artwork or window treatments, then choose smaller-scale designs for accent pillows and textiles in your home. The more to scale your designs are, the more comfortable and welcoming the space will be.

5. Don’t stay away from bright colors and prints

The advantage of choosing patterns to mix and match is that there are so many bright colors you can choose from. Jewel-rich burgundy tones; Garnet red and navy blue could look adorable on your zebra print accent chair! Choose prints that have a monochromatic design and don’t visually compete with surrounding bright colors. This living room does a great job of taking a neutral wall paint and combining it with the right amount of colors and textures to create an element of awe. Remember that you don’t just needchoose pastel colors in your interior, bright colors can be exciting and invigorating!

6. Find a pattern you like and emulate it in your decor

If you are a fan of gingham stripes or plaids or even polka dots, why not mix these textures in intertwined decorative textiles? Your bedroom is a great room to try. Introduce a solid color to the linens, coordinate accent pillows and an accent rug to balance out your favorite textures.

7. Tone on tone helps neutralize your space

For some years, the choice of a tone or the possibility of choosing different saturations and different shades of the same color in its interior has facilitated the interior decoration of many. Using different shades of chocolate brown, grey, white and gray can easily mix and match designs as the result is a combination of different levels of impact. Choose one or two large printed embellishments, then tone down other furnishings with a smaller, tighter vibrant print.

8. Find inspiration in the details of patterns and prints

For many homeowners, the thought of choosing wallpaper, pleats, fabrics and other decorative textures makes them even more confused as to what they really like to embrace in their interior. Instead, choose a piece of wall art you love, or a beautiful, colorful wall decor, and get inspired by it. Find patterns and prints that represent your focal point or match colors and styles that complement it. This will keep your mind from getting overwhelmed and ensure that you will like the outcome you decide on.

9. Choose prints and patterns from your recent travels

Visiting other countries and traveling the world can bring back a wonderful collection of fabrics and textiles from your travels. Use these textures and prints and mix them with solid tones in your living space or even on your bed to bring your dull bedroom to life. You’ll be surprised how a few fabrics native to your favorite and newest destinations will create a piece of furniture you’ll love!

10. Consider using wallpaper to add simple patterns

ExperienceInteriors/Getty Images

Although you may only think of textiles, remember that patterns can be expressed through your wallpaper. Wallpaper is an easy way to show off your love of bold or subtle background prints without overwhelming your furniture. If you choose a very large and bold print, consider using it on an accent wall behind your bed or dining room wall, then using a smaller print or even painting on the adjacent wall. This will help keep the room balanced and comfortable for the eyes and the mind.
