Electric shocks are often depicted in physical comedies, and the plot unfolds as it should: the main character of the comic accidentally touches an electric wire without knowing that a high current is flowing through it. He received a fatal shock that resulted in a stereotypical shimmy, his black face burned and his hair hanging down like an umbrella turned inward by the wind.

The question of why this fatal accident is supposed to be funny is disturbing…interesting, but disturbing. A reasonable answer can be foundthis. However, this discourse is not appropriate at this time. What worries us is why we are not sensitive to electricity and at what percentage it will actually kill us.

Why is high voltage considered dangerous?

Of course, this is knowledge required for security reasons. On circuit boards and generators, we find warning messages with a common symbol of danger: a human skull hanging from two crossbones.

This symbol accompanies the rating of this machine, highlights the high voltage at which it operates, and tells you that you could potentially die from it. The use of tension has created a psychological tendency in us. We now believe that 10,000 volts is more lethal than 100 volts. However, this is only partially true. Electric shock can often occur at household voltages of 110 volts or in some cases even 42 volts!

Sure, more voltage will generate more current, but it’s not the caliber that kills us, it’s the bullet it fires. Regardless of the voltage, the real cause of death is the current flowing through the body.

However, we must not completely eliminate voltage, because if there is no potential difference or potential difference, there will be no current at all. When the current exceeds 1000mA or 1A, muscle contraction increases to the point where we cannot release the conductor. This persistence is, ironically, the result ofmuscle paralysis.

At this point, the heart is in ventricular fibrillation, the ventricles contract in an uncoordinated, intermittent manner, causing an inefficient heart rhythm, which can lead to death if not treated immediately.

Additional current up to 2000 mA or 2A leads to burns and unconsciousness. The phenomenon of muscle contraction due to shock is so strong that the heart is pinched. Exposure to such an amount of current can lead to terrible internal burns and clamping can lead to cardiac arrest. Death is possible.

However, the clamping mechanism is designed to be surprisingly cost effective as it protects the heart from ventricular fibrillation. The chances of survival are slim, but they can be redeemed by immediate medical assistance to the victim. Defibrillators are medical devices used by doctors to save victims of shock.

Why are we not immune to electric current?

While a certain voltage is needed to allow current to flow, the amount of current entering our body depends on the body’s permeability to current or simply its resistance. . Resistance to electric current varies depending on the condition of the skin – dry or wet. It is estimated at 1000 ohms for wet skin and over 500,000 ohms for dry skin.

The resistance also varies depending on the point of contact. The internal resistance between the ears is only 100 ohms, while the finger-toe measurement is around 500 ohms. Due to this finite resistance, we are insensitive to current.

Another important factor is time. The extent of the challenge depends on how long the body is exposed to a certain electrical current. For example, a current of 1/10 of an ampere can cause death in just 2 seconds.
