It’s every traveler’s worst nightmare – you’re late for a flight and stuck behind someone who’s packed a full-size shampoo bottle, and who knows what else, in their luggage, forcing the TSA to do anything. carry in his pocket. Nobody wants to be the boss of the whole chain. The good news is that by understanding exactly what toiletries you can and cannot bring in your carry-on, you canSmarter packagingand traverse these lines without interruption.

TSA regulations

Holdregulations in force on the TSABeing careful when packing not only makes your airport experience easier, but also helps you avoid a TSA agent throwing away that expensive perfume you forgot in your checked bag. There are a few important principles to keep in mind when packing items in your luggage.

  • You can bring a one liter bag of liquids, gels, creams, pastes and sprays with you when boarding.
  • These must come in travel containers (no larger than 3.4oz or 100ml).
  • Place these items in a transparent bag that can be easily removed from your hand luggage when checking in (not required, but recommended).
  • You may need to additionally check if any of these trigger an alarm.

There are two exceptions when it comes to liquids – both drugs andbaby or children’s food(e.g. breast milk and juice) are allowed in larger quantities, and it is helpful to let the TSA know you are carrying them before screening begins.

Toiletries you can bring

Whether you’re packing for a business trip, a weekend getaway, or a longer adventure, a single carry can save you money on extra baggage fees and save you a lot of money. money. after landing. One of the keys to packing is understanding (and how many) liquids, gels, makeup, and other toiletries are allowed on the plane with you.

There are lots of weird items you can bring in your luggage (e.g. antlers and artificial skeletons), but what toiletries can you take on board? The TSA has a comprehensive list of permitted and prohibited items, so it’s worth checking before you go. Commonly packaged toiletries that are permitted include:

  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Washcloth
  • hairpins
  • Hand curling iron
  • Insect repellent spray
  • Shaving cream
  • Cleaning
  • Shampoo
  • Air conditioner
  • Lotion
  • Shower gel or liquid soap

Here are some common questions and answers about packing toiletries in your luggage:

  • Can I bring a razor?
  • This is a great question with a surprising answer. Yes, you can actually take a disposable razor with you to shave. All other types of razor blades are strictly prohibited.
  • What about nail clipping?
  • You are allowed to bring nail clippers and nail scissors, just make sure if the blade is attached it is under 4 inches long.
  • Is lotion considered a liquid?
  • Yes, it’s true. All lotions must come in containers of 3.4 oz or less. The same goes for toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream, etc.
  • I have about 2 oz of shampoo left in a 12 oz bottle, can I bring it?
  • Unfortunately, you cannot. You will need to transfer it to a travel bottle (3.4 oz or less).
  • Can I bring batteries for my electric razor or toothbrush?
  • Yes! You certainly can.
  • Is powder makeup regulated by the TSA?
  • While all gel and liquid makeup (like foundation, mascara, lipstick, etc.) has a 3.4 oz limit, liquid makeup does not. So you can pack these items to take with you without worrying about size.

Tips for preparing your luggage

Packing carry-on luggage is always a delicate balance. On the other hand, you might be trying to keep it simple and avoid checking bags altogether. In this case, you do not need to move these toiletries into another bag if you arrive at the airport and find that they are not allowed in your luggage. And even if you check in a bigger bag, it’s great if you pack toiletries, especially if you’re traveling on a longer flight and want to brush your teeth and wash your face before putting on your Mask page and use the surroundings.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when packing:

  • Buy travel bottles to hold your shampoo, lotion, conditioner, and any other liquids you plan to take with you on your trip. Then fill them from your normal sized bottles. You’ll save money (buying reusable bottles and refilling them with products you already own) and making sure you stay within your carry-on baggage limits at all times.
  • Pack all of your toiletries in a quart-sized Ziploc bag (or other durable quart-sized bag) so they’re all together. This will save you from finding travel size toothpaste at the bottom of your bag that runs all the scanners.
  • Place your toiletries at the top of your carry-on so you can easily retrieve them when you arrive for your TSA inspection. This speeds up the process and avoids queues.

Key point

Packing for a trip can seem daunting, especially when you’re trying to avoid checked baggage and opt for a carry-on instead. When it comes to packing items in your luggage, the packaging of toiletries remains one of the biggest mysteries. To avoid hitting TSA lines and potentially having your favorite shampoo thrown in the trash by a TSA agent, plan ahead and make sure the toiletries you bring meet TSA guidelines. Airport security rules can make packing your toiletries challenging – especially when it comes to liquids. Today I’ll show you how to efficiently pack toiletries, makeup, and meds when traveling only with carry-on luggage.

Here are my top tips to pack a TSA-approved toiletry bag.

All liquids must be placed in a 3 oz (50ml) or less sized container.

All liquids need to be packed in a clear quart-sized bag.

All liquid medication or makeup must also be placed in that clear bag.

The TSA-approved toiletry bag must then be taken out of the bag when passing airport security.

All other toiletries, makeup or medication that is not a gel or a liquid can be placed in the carry-on with no problem.
