4500/220 = 20.45 amps. 20.45 amps X 125% = 25,568 rounded up to 30 amps

Why not 20? After all, it’s close to 6:75 p.m.

Well, 18.75 is only about 94% of the circuit breaker amperage. But according to the NEC 125% rule, a current of 20 amps presents a risk of frequent tripping and can damage the water heater.

A 25 amp circuit breaker should suffice; However, mostelectricianwill install a 30 amp circuit to allow room for electrical fluctuations as noted above.
