Multi-read content how to program a digital thermostat

Programming a thermostat can seem daunting. This comment wasn’t made by a frustrated homeowner, but by John Galeotafiore, who oversees testing of thermostats and other home products for “Consumer Reports.” Challenges can lead to programming errors or even avoiding programming altogether.

But programming isn’t really difficult and it’s definitely worth it as it can save at least 10% per year on heating and cooling costs.

The US Department of Energy says you can achieve that 10% by turning your thermostat down 7 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit from its normal setting for eight hours a day, when you’re sleeping, for example.

The first step is to choose the thermostat that best suits your scheduling needs so you can “set it and forget it,” an approach advocated by the Department of Energy for maximum savings.

Choose the right thermostat

There are four types of programmable thermostats, each with its own programming scheme:

7 day programming.Ideal for individuals or families with irregular schedules, as it is the most flexible option. It allows you to program different cooling/heating schedules for each day of the week.

5-1-1 programming. One heating/cooling program for the week, and you can program another heating/cooling program for Saturday and Sunday.

Programming 5-2.Similar to 5-1-1 scheduling, except Saturday and Sunday will have the same heating/cooling plan.

1 week program. You can only set one heating/cooling schedule which will be repeated daily for the whole week.

You will need a program for the colder months and the warmer months.

POINT:Before purchasing a programmable thermostat, determine what type of device is used to heat and cool your home so you can check compatibility. For example, do you have central heating and air conditioning, or do you heat only with fireplaces or baseboards? Otherwise, you risk not reaping the benefits of energy savings and risk damaging your heating and cooling equipment.

Change factory settings

Most programmable thermostats have pre-programmed settings that are meant to be for the typical American home. But which family is typical these days? You need to adjust your thermostat settings so that it syncs with you and your family life instead of a fake family.

Programmable thermostats typically use a daily or weekday/weekend schedule, and almost all smart thermostats offer a daily schedule. Once you know the type of schedule your thermostat uses, record the times your family gets up, leaves home, comes home, and goes to bed each day of the week so you can use it when you schedule your thermostat. .

The Department of Energy recommends the following parameters as a general guideline for energy savings:

Winter months:

  • During the hours when you stay home and wake up, program the temperature for 68F.
  • Lower it at least 10 degrees during the hours you sleep or leave the house.

Summer months:

  • For the hours you stay home, program the air conditioner to 78 F.
  • For those days when you don’t need cooling,
  • Mains power off
  • . Remember that it will work again if the house gets too hot.
  • Schedule it to be warmer than usual when you’re away from home.

Here are some timing tips to help you create the best heating and cooling schedule for your home:

  • Turn off the heater or air conditioner 20 to 30 minutes before you leave the house each day.
  • Turn on the heater or air conditioner 20 to 30 minutes before you get home each day.
  • Lower the heating or cooling temperature 60 minutes before going to bed each night.
  • Turn up the heat or air conditioning about 30 minutes before you wake up each morning.
  • Take the time to tweak your program over a few days to make sure it’s working properly.

POINT:With a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, you can control your home temperature from anywhere. So you won’t waste energy if you’re late or forget to create a new schedule before you go on vacation.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:The furnace does NOT need to work harder to heat a home after the temperature has been set low for the day.

Use a Wi-Fi thermostat to make it super easy

Want something simpler? New high-tech models have simplified the process:

Nest Learning Thermostats:It learns what temperature you prefer and builds a program around you. Independent studies show that it saves people an average of 10%-12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills. Since it is Wi-Fi, it can be controlled remotely. Price: $249.

Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat:With seven-day scheduling, the Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat lets you create custom temperature schedules for each day of the week. When schedules change, you can temporarily update your settings and easily restore your usual schedule. Price: $169.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:If your thermostat was manufactured before 2005, it may contain mercury. After this date, digital thermostats entered the market and eventually dominated the thermostat market. That said, some contemporary companies still manufacture mercury thermostats. To find out if your programmable thermostat contains mercury, check with the manufacturer. If you decide to throw away your mercury-containing thermostat, find a thermostat recycling site near you by contactingThermostat Recycling Company. (Not sure why mercury is so bad? Here’s the little part: it’s toxic and never breaks down. When it enters the waste stream, it permanently destroys ecosystems.)
