Male Downy Woodpecker Eating SuetThe male woodpecker eats suet

There are many ways to hang the feeder. But what is the best way? My approach to providing suet to birds has evolved over the years. Through lots of trial and error with the type and placement of feeders, I learned a lot about the manufacturing process and where to hang them. My current setup has worked very well from season to season. Now I don’t have to worry about that at all. It works.

Suet Feeder Under an ERVA BaffleBirds Choose Suet Feeder Under an ERVA Baffle

Inverter on one pole

A few years ago I tried alots of places and strategies for locating tallow.. I also tried a DIY method to”Starling Proofing the Suet”. But when athe raccoon started getting into my suet feeder and making a mess, I changed the place to hang them. And it made a huge difference!

I invested in two shepherd’s double hook stakes with raccoon crate deflectors to deter squirrels and raccoons. And I added a little arm to one of the shepherd’s hooks. This gave me a total of five places to hangBird’s Choice Flip-Up Suet Feederswhich I now use exclusively for suet. For the past two years this is how my business has been delivered and it works great.

Suet Feeders on Pole Near Front WindowSuet loader on pole near front window

Find the best pole location

One of these shepherd’s hooks is located a few feet from the large front yard living room window. This one has two suet feeders. It is close enough to the front window to minimize bird attacks. It is also close enough to the front porch that the downy woodpecker first flies over the vertical railing slats for a brief hold before flying to the feeder.

Fortunately, even with this relative proximity to the porch and the house, the squirrels stayed completely away from it. The birds on these feeders can be easily observed from the living room.

Post Mounted Suet Feeders in the Backyard

The other post is in the garden, twenty-five meters from the back door. It is easily visible from the kitchen and dining room windows. This one has an extra small arm to accommodate three suet feeders.

To note: If you are having trouble with your wrench or starling using one end of the barrel deflector to enter the straw, there is a fairly simple fix. Discover my articles onThe pest bird uses the partition to get the suet.

Hang the kit away from other feeding trays

Both poles have suet feeders ONLY and the nearest grain feeder at least 25 feet away. My tests of placing the suet feeder right next to the granulator or even just a bit further away did not work well. I find it important to space them at least this far apart for several related reasons.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker Eating SuetRed-bellied Woodpecker eats suet

First, if you offer suet next to or on a seed feeding tray, it may scare off some of the birds you are trying to attract. More social birds such as Carolina wrens or blue jays often like to eat when other birds are nearby. But more solitary birds like Downy Woodpeckers and Red-bellied Woodpeckers don’t want to feed among noisy flocks of birds.

Mourning Dove on Top of Shepherd's Hook PoleCrying pigeons on top of the shepherd’s perch

Second, even if you only place the suet feeder on a pole but place that pole too close to other feeders, you will get other birds using the shepherd’s hook as a stopping point before they can fly away to the seed machine. And again the birds in the suet trough were disturbed. With peaks, distance is appreciated.

Carolina wren Eating SuetCarolina Wren eats suet

Because there are two or three suet feeders hanging from the same post, you may wonder if several birds are ready to eat at the same time. I have never seen all three suet feeders used at the same time, but often two are used at the same time.

Pine Warbler Eating SuetPine warbler eats suet

If you don’t want to use the post

I think poles are the best way to hang a soft feeder to keep squirrels away. But maybe the column is not what you want to use in your garden. If so, check out my article on howKeep squirrels out of Hung Suet Feeders.. On the other hand, my article onWhere to hang a Suet tray.detail the pros and cons of the many possible tallow transit locations.

Birds on my suet feeders

The birds that use our suet feeders the most are woodpeckers and nightingales. But Tufted Chickadees, Carolina Chickadees, and White-breasted Nuthatches will take a bite out of them once in a while. And Coal Warbler will occasionally eat their bait as they cross the yard.

Come spring, the Blue Jays will hang on for a while to restore the health of their young. At the end of winter, European starlings do the same, but since the feeder is upside down, they get bored quite quickly.

In the past week alone, three Eastern Bluebirds have been circling the yard and also grabbing the same craze in a short amount of time. Sometimes different species of birds prowl the ground under the feeder to pick up debris that other birds have dropped.

Baffle and PoleBaffles and posts for bird feeders

Of course, good quality heaps and baffles don’t come cheap, but I’ve found that by delivering suet in this more protected manner, I don’t have to refill suet feeders nearly as often. . So this one-time payment saves me money over time and the birds seem pretty happy.
