What if I can’t find the shut-off valve or can’t turn off the water in the shower?

Do all showers have shut off valves?

Most showers don’t have their own shut-off valve. Shut-off valves are more common with toilets and sinks, although your shower may have them in rare cases.

Having a shower shutoff valve is a bit of a luxury as it allows you to shut off water entering the shower and make repairs without taking water for the whole house.

If you are remodeling or building your home, you have the option of installing a shower shut-off valve.

Can I turn off the water for my shower only?

There are two main ways to shut off the water with just your shower. First, the screwdriver stopper, built-in stopper, or valve stopper are the screws behind the shower handle cover on your shower valve. When these screws are tightened, they close your shower valve, allowing water to flow elsewhere in the house but blocking your shower.

The only other way to shut off your shower water is to use a shower shut-off valve. As stated earlier, these shower-specific shutoff valves are not common and if your valve doesn’t have a cap driver, your only other option is to use the main shutoff valve to shut off the water from the whole house.

Where is the water stop valve for the shower?

lodge

There are several places where the main water shutoff valve can be located in the house. Sometimes you can find the valve on the outside.

These valves are usually found following your water meter in a straight line to one of your exterior walls. Or it could be behind an external access panel. You can usually find exterior valves by walking around interior walls.

But other times, the shutoff valve will be inside your home. In this case, they are usually near the bathroom in a closet or basement.

Apartment

Apartments have a variety of water systems and sometimes it is difficult to find shut-off valves. However, you will find the valve under the bathroom or kitchen sink in some cases.

Another common location for an apartment shut-off valve is a common laundry room. When the valve is located in the utility room, it is usually located behind a locked utility cupboard. If this is the case, you will need to contact the apartment manager or housekeeping staff to have the water turned off.

Trailer

Mobile homes are built differently from houses or apartments. With mobile homes raised off the ground, you will often find shutoff valves under a mobile home. In addition, there are usually two circuit breakers on the main waterline under the cell phone.

You can also find the shut-off valve near the water heater or outside near the water meter.

How to turn off the water in a shower

Application tool

  • Screwdriver
  • Allen keys
  • pliers
  • adjustable wrench
  • Flashlight (preferably headlights)
  • Spray lubricant (if you have a stuck valve)

Step by step instructions

lodge

For the comfort of everyone living in your home, you should first try shutting off the shower water through the valve screws or the shower shut-off valve. If you have one.

Step 1.
To access the valve, remove the cover from your shower handle.

2nd step.
Some panels can be removed using screws, hex bolts, or simply by prying with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 3.
Once your visor is removed, check your valve to see if it has a screw blocking the valve. There will always be two of these screws near the top of the valve, one on each side.

Step 4.
Unscrew these screws completely and check your shower to make sure the water is off. You can use pliers to rotate your handles if you have trouble turning them once the mask is removed.

Step 5.
If you don’t have a screw-on faucet but you have a shower faucet, you can simply turn the faucet by hand clockwise until it stops, which will turn off the water in your shower.

Step 6.
If you don’t have a shower valve or valve screw, locate your main shutoff valve and turn it clockwise until it stops and test your water to make sure it stops working.

Apartment

Turning off the water in your apartment can be tricky because you may not have access to a shutoff valve.

Step 1.
Check your bathroom and kitchen sink below. If you find a valve there, you’re in luck. Simply turn the valve clockwise to shut off the water to your apartment.

2nd step.
If your apartment does not have a shut-off valve, the problem is not beyond your control as you will need to contact management or maintenance to have the water turned off.

Step 3.
Usually management will ask you why you want to shut off your water supply and demand that all repairs be done.

Trailer

Perhaps your mobile home shower can have its own shut-off valve or shut-off valve.

Step 1.
Check by following the steps in the home section, such as removing the shower cap or cover, tightening the valve screws, or closing the stand-alone shower valve.

2nd step.
If your shower doesn’t have its own shut-off valve or shut-off screw, prepare to get dirty.

Step 3.
The permanent mobile home must have an external bulkhead that goes through the bottom of the unit. This partition can be removed to give you access under the mobile home.

Step 4.
When you’re ready to go under the mobile home, I suggest you put on some clothes you don’t really care about and bring a flashlight, preferably a spotlight, to keep your hands free.

Step 5.
Once you are under the mobile home, locate the main water line which should be slightly larger than the rest of the plumbing and will run through most of the mobile home.

Step 6.
Once you locate the main water pipe, follow it until you find a valve. Then simply close this valve by turning it clockwise by hand.

Step 7.
Most cell phones have two shutoff valves, with each valve shutting off water to a certain area of the house. For greater safety, it is preferable to close both valves.

What if I can’t find the shut-off valve or can’t turn off the water in the shower?

If you can find the shutoff valve but cannot turn it off, you should call a professional plumber to help diagnose the problem.

If you can’t find your shutoff valve, you have several options. If you own your home, the best option is to check the property inspection report when you buy your home. This inspection report lists the locations of many items in your home, including water shutoff valves.

Instead, if you are renting an apartment, the maintenance or manager should know the location of all water shutoff valves in the complex.
