Soaking in a bubble bath after a hectic day is one of the best things in life. But if you have a standard tub, you might feel like it’s never full. The overflow drainage system prevents water from flowing upwards. If you’re taller, that means your shoulders or toes will always be above the water – so that part of your body will never get hot. Now you might be wondering, is there a way to seal an overflowing bathtub? Fortunately, yes. Here’s how.

Main subject

How to Seal an Overturned Tub Choose and Buy a Tub Overflow Cover or Sheet2. Remove your tub’s standard overflow cover 3. Clean the drain hole 4. Install an overflow cover or plate 5. Check for a new stopper or plate FAQHow to unclog yourself a bathtub overflow? Can you plug the overflow drain? Can you remove the tub overflow? Summary

How to seal an overflow bathtub?

The overflow is an essential element of the bathtub. Its role is to collect water and prevent it from dripping all over your bathroom floors if you accidentally leave it on. Technically, you should never cover this drain with a plug. That said, you can seal it with a removable splash-proof plate, lid, or lid.

Things you will need

  • Tub overflow plate or cover
  • Overflow seal
  • Screwdriver
  • Caulk
  • Knife
  • Straight blade razor
  • pliers

1. Choose and buy tub covers or overflow plates

The overflow drainage system has a functional role, andUniform Plumbing Codespecifically require that all baths have such a drain. That means you can’t seal a tub spill if you want your fixture to follow the rule.

That said, there are options to bypass the code. The most common solutions include a splash-proof tub cover or a rubber cap with suction cups that you can press against the drain and remove as needed.

Alternatively, you can remove the standard cap and replace it with a permanent splash plate. We do not recommend this solution because it would be difficult to use the bathtub overflow if necessary. However, the option is there.

Of all the options above, the rubber (or silicone) cap is the cheapest. Acting like a bathtub overflow stopper, this type of cover goes through an existing bathtub overflow cover and attaches to the tub wall using suction cups. If you need to use the overflow drain, simply remove it – this cover requires no semi-permanent or permanent installation.

The cover replaces the standard strainer-style perforated cover supplied with your tub. This type of plug is similar to the bottom drain plug. You need to fix it in place of the standard lid and be able to swing it one way to close it (and allow the tub to fill to the rim) and the other to open it (allowing water to flow).

A spill plate also replaces the standard hole plug, but it has no opening. It installs permanently on your bathtub and is a good choice if you are sure you will never have to use an overflow.

2. Get rid of your standard bathtub overflow cover

Most manufacturers cover the bathtub overflow drain holes with single or multi-hole panels, but this improves the aesthetics of the bathtub. To install a closed overflow cover or plate, you must first remove the original cover.

Generally, manufacturers fix this cover with two side screws. In rare cases, they glue it in place with putty or plumber’s putty.

Check your tub and see how the cover is installed. If attached with screws, use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver to remove them.

If the clog is sealed with putty, use a spatula to remove as much of the grout around the clog as possible, then remove it from the drain. Usually you can grab it and pull it out by hand, but if you can’t, use a pair of pliers to pull it out. After removing the plug, pull the gasket that seals the spill.

3. Clean the drain hole

Once you’ve removed the original cover, check the drain hole for any seals or gaskets. If the opening is not clean, use a straight razor to remove any rubber or caulk shavings. You can then clean the area with an all-purpose cleaner before proceeding.

4. Installation of cover or overflow plate

Align the new gasket with the overflow space, making sure the thicker side is facing down. Gently push it into place.

Before buying a gasket, check the new cap or plate you want to install – most of them come with the gasket in the box. If yours does not have one, purchase an appropriately sized pad from your home repair shop. Never reuse the original seal you removed.

Once the spacer is in place, line up the new cover or plate with the hole, positioning the screw holes in relation to the grooves in the drum. Secure the cover with the anchors provided. Seal with silicone sealant around the lid when finished.

5. Check out the new cover or plate

All you have to do is close the new overflow cover if you have chosen to close the cover and fill the tub to the maximum. If using a saucer, simply fill the pot.

Wait about 15-30 minutes and check the water level in the tub. If the lid works properly, you should find the tub full to the brim when you go to the toilet. However, if the water level has dropped, you may want to remove the cover and reinstall it as it may lack a seal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to unclog a drain in a DIY bathtub?

Don’t want to replace the original overflow plug and can’t find a rubber plug in your DIY store? There are a number of homemade overflow cover alternatives that you can use if you don’t want to go to the store. These measures include sealing the overflow drain with waterproof tape before filling the tub, filling the drain plug openings with a waterproof or flexible sealant, or sealing the overflow drain with a rubber stopper or glove. toiletry bag placed in a plastic bag to prevent it from getting wet. .

Can you hook up an overflow drain?

You can plug the overflow drain pipe with a rubber stopper or a cleaning rag. To do this, you must first remove the cover from the standard drain hole. Use a rubber plug slightly larger than the overflow drain hole to ensure a tight seal. If you decide to use a face towel, put it in a plastic bag and then stuff it into the hole. The bag will prevent water from seeping into the fabric and possibly flowing down the drain.

Can you remove the tub overflow?

No, you cannot remove the overflow from the bathtub. Bathtub overflow drainage is required by the plumbing code and is essential to minimize damage if you accidentally forget the faucet. Worried that an overflowing bathtub will leak through the ceiling? As long as your plumbing system is working properly, such leaks are unlikely.

In short

Sealing a tub overflow is easy, but you should consider solutions that allow you to use that drain when needed. You should also only plug in the overflow when you want to soak in the tub. Forgetting to unplug when you’re done means other family members or roommates could accidentally flood the bathroom. We hope this guide can help you choose the right option. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact a licensed plumber.
