How to Remove Grout

A few years after completing a bathroom or kitchen renovation, it will inevitably start to show signs of wear and tear. One of the culprits is grout: over time, grout stains, cracks and comes off, even when installed by a professional. And if the grout isn’t done right from the start, the job probably won’t last long. Fortunately, grout removal and replacement is within reach of the average DIYer. Indeed, rerouting tiles can restore the lost shine and is well worth the time and effort.

How to Remove Grout

It’s certainly possible to remove grout by hand, the old-fashioned way, but you should opt for a power tool. This makes it possible to work much faster on what can be a laborious, time-consuming and potentially frustrating household project.

Manual Grout Removal

If you want to go the no-power-tool route, you’ll need a manual grout remover (see example on Amazon). They usually come in one of two flavors. One looks like a screwdriver with a triangular carbide blade attached to its end. How it works? You pull the tool through the grout joint until at least 1/8 inch is removed. The second type of manual grout removal tool has a carbide sharpening blade – that’s why it’s sometimes called a grout saw. To use it, you simply saw into old grout the same way you saw into wood.

Removing grout with Power Tool

If power tools are more your style, you have at least a few efficient options. The first is to equip your motion saw with an attachment specifically designed for grout removal. Alternatively, you can choose an oscillator like the owner’s favorite Dremel (look on amazon). Oscillators excel in small jobs because they are highly controllable.

Whatever power tool you choose to help remove grout, be sure to have a chisel or flat-blade screwdriver handy. Stubborn lumps often need a little coaxing to get out.

How to grout tiles

The first step in the grouting process is to mix a certain amount of grouting powder with a specific amount of water. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Whether you choosemortar mixed with sand or without sanddepends on the desired width of the joints between the bricks. Undiluted grout is often used to create relatively thin grouts; grit is recommended for joints wider than 1/8 inch.

Photo: shutterstock.com

  1. Once you have properly mixed the grout in the bucket, cover it with a plastic towel.
  2. Then use the grout float to press the grout deep into the joints between the bricks. As you do this, hold the float at a 45 degree angle to the wall or floor surface.
  3. Once you’re happy with the grout distribution, clean up excess grout before it has a chance to harden. To do this, use the trowel again, this time holding the tool at an 80 degree angle to scrape excess grout from the tile. In combination with the grout float, a large damp sponge can be handy to wipe away any remaining grout dust. (Rinse the sponge regularly and change the rinse water when it becomes cloudy.)
  4. Allow the grout to harden for a period of 24 to 48 hours. Only walk on the tile surface after this time has elapsed.
