Does that mean it can’t safely do higher loads? Not only being able to do this, but also understanding that safety rules go too far and often cause more headaches than is reasonable.

Electrical fires cause thousands of home fires every year, so in the name of safety, home wiring standards are heavily regulated.

Most of the time, these regulations go beyond what is necessary, but accountability is the key word, as well as prosecution.

If your house catches fire, one of the first things an insurance agent will check is the fuse panel to see if your 14 gauge wire switches to the 15 amp fuse. Continue in the same way with the rest of your wiring.

It doesn’t matter if a strange malfunction of the hair dryer with the house cat causes a fire. If wire 14 fails to the 15 amp fuse, you won’t get paid.

Are there any cases where the 14 meter wire can handle higher amperage?

Not only in circumstances where it is possible, but also in higher temperature conditions. Like all copper wiring, regardless of the meter, a higher temperature rating means a higher allowable amperage.

When we say “allowed” it simply defines what a wire is allowed to endure according to regulations and standards. You can find these standards in Clause 310 of NEC 310-16 Allowable Gain of Insulated Conductors.

The power does not change much when it reaches a temperature of 75ºC. However, it jumps to 25 amps at 90°C. As the amperage increases, the temperature of the conductor also increases.

This is also affected by ambient heat and whether the wiring is near an additional heat source, such as a water heater, stove, or clothes dryer.

These factors affect the heat a conductor is able to receive at a given amperage.

This is what drives the ampacity tables, strict regulations and standard procedures that electricians must follow, not only for the safety of those around the wires, but also to prevent legal separation.

Aluminum differs from copper in that it forms an oxide layer on its surface in response to an electric current flowing through it. This layer acts as a “resistance” to the current flowing through it.

The reason there is no 14 gauge wire for aluminum is because the gauge wire needs to be thicker to have the same resistance as the copper wire. Due to the strength of aluminum, the higher the gauge, the better the amperage.

If you look through the NEC 310 – 316, you will notice that the aluminum wire matches the copper meter wire, which is 5 amps less.

If you are going to run 14 gauge wire – from a 15 amp circuit – to, say, a shop and you decide to use aluminum, you will need to run12 gauge wireto achieve the same level of amplification.

What happens if you plug 14 test leads into a 20A circuit?

Generally all is well, however, if any form of electrical fire occurs, whatever the cause, it will come back to bite you if you file a claim.

The other problem would be all the different variables in between. For example, the extra heat from the wire could trip the circuit breaker, depending on what it’s designed to sense.

In residential designs, things are usually limited to a temperature of 60 ºC. Although 20 amps flowing through a 14 gauge isn’t likely to cause an electrical fire, it could do more damage to the surrounding sheath/insulation layers, probably also classed as standard.

Using thicker test leads, such as a 10-15 amp circuit, would be beneficial. There is less resistance along the wire, less heat and less loading at the ends, which reduces energy consumption and costs.

How far does a 14 meter wire travel before the voltage drops?

For a 120V circuit, you can run 14 test leads up to 50 feet before experiencing a voltage drop. For a 240V circuit, double the distance to 100 feet.

The voltage drop that occurs over distance is naturally caused by moving over long distances. Resistance, capacitance, heat, etc. all affect voltage drop.

When going beyond 50 feet of a 120V circuit with 14 test leads, you can expect a voltage drop of 3.3%. At 240V, when you exceed 100′, the voltage drop will be approximately 6.6%.

So at 120V it will drop to 116.04V and 240V to 232.08V. Double the distance and the voltage, you double the voltage drop.
