Multi-read content how to size a rug for a room

1. Choose the perfect size first!

The first thing to decide is the size of a rug. Measure and choose the optimal size before moving on to design, color selection and composition.

The size of a rug is important in tying the room together and tying it all together to create a balanced space. In an open room, an area rug can define the area and improve the overall aesthetic of the room.

Choose the most appropriate size possible, as it will unify a room and define the space you wish to cover. A rug that is too small will make a room look smaller and can also make furniture look scrappy.

Example of mat size:
160x230cm
200x290cm
250x350cm
300x400cm

2. Think outside the square (or rectangle) and consider the shape.

The most common shape is rectangular for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and narrow hallways.

However, a round rug is an interesting choice in a bedroom or can add a touch of interest to a living room, playroom or study space.

If you’re feeling more creative, you can customize a special rug shape for your space, which can be made to order. The choice is yours depending on your budget, the size of the room and the destination of the rug.

3. If you feel like you have too many choices or want a rug that will outlast trends, choose one with a timeless texture or durable flat panel.

Textured rugs and flat rugs are currently the most popular in our extensive collection.

Thick, luxurious and beautifully soft, some of our popular textures includeMagic,Diva,GarciaandWash.

Flat rugs are durable and perfect for busy dining rooms and living rooms. Popular designs includePalmas,Kobe,Zigo,Ombre Braids, sufferedandShadow

5. Define your space. Here are some sample layouts to use as a guide.

FLOOR ROOM – For an open concept living

In an open-plan living room, a rug should be large enough to fit under the four legs of each couch, couch, and chair. It will define the space and balance the size of the furniture and the surrounding space, while creating a relaxed and warm atmosphere for a space.

CLASSIC LIVING PLACE – For a classic lifestyle

In rooms with furniture against the wall, a rug should be large enough to fit under the front legs of all elements of the living room set. For a more formal look, choose to place your feet completely off the mat. See example below.

IN THE DINING ROOM – Scale and proportion are key

For the dining room, a rug should always balance the dining table.

It is best to leave enough space on either side of the table to avoid “trapping” the back of the rug with the chair. The rear seat feet should always rest on the mat, even when in use. Your mat should be about 1.2m to 1.5m wider and longer than your table (i.e. at least 65-75cm around the circumference of the table for the chair).

IN THE ROOM – Cosy, bright and luxurious

A rug in the bedroom will warm and soften a hard-floored room. A rug adds colors, patterns and textures to add a touch of luxury and comfort to a room.

Make sure the rug is under your feet when you get out of bed. The rug should be large enough to fit under the bed and bedside tables. Another option is to place a rug under the bed, separating the side table.

Popular questions about how to size a rug for a room

How do you determine the size of an area rug for a room?

As a rule of thumb, your area rug should be roughly the size of your seating area. This helps define the space. Leave at least 18-24 inches of flooring exposed beyond the edges of the rug to keep open space for walking and define the living room space.

How much smaller should a rug be than the room?

If you want a room size rug, then people have commonly left a one foot border around their room. This will typically place the rug under the furniture. For a room that’s 11′ x 13′, we subtract 2 feet from each dimension (to leave a one foot border on each side). The rug would then be 9′ x 11′.

How do you tell if a rug is too big for a room?

If a rug is too small, it will appear as if it is floating in the room. If it is too large it will overpower the room and make the room appear smaller than it is.

What size rug do I need for a 12×12 room?

How to find the right rug size
Room Size Rug Size Examples
4′ x 5′ 2′ x 3′ Entryways, bathrooms
7′ x 10′ 5′ x 8′ Living rooms, bedrooms
10′ x 12′ 8′ x 10′ Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms
11′ x 14′ 9′ x 12′ Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms

How do you calculate rug size?

Make sure your rug is at least 6″ wider (8″ is ideal) than your sofa on both sides. Typically run the rug the length of the sofa. Give 30″ to 36″ of a walkway between large furniture pieces (if your living room allows for it) if not then at least 18″-24″. That will help to inform your rug size.

How large is a 8×10 rug?

around 80 square feet
You can take out your measuring tape and map out a rectangular shape measuring 8 feet by 10 feet or 240 cm by 300 cm. This should give you an idea of how big the rug is when spread out on the floor. Therefore, the rug is around 80 square feet in an area rug size.13 thg 12, 2019

How much bigger should rug be than dining table?

24 to 30 inches
As a general rule, your dining room rug should be larger than your dining table by 24 to 30 inches on all four sides. The rug should sit directly under the dining table and centered in the room to make the space feel balanced.22 thg 4, 2021

Does a large rug make a room look bigger or smaller?

Rugs or carpets can also help you create the illusion of a larger room. Large area rugs (avoid placing several small rugs), can make your place look more prominent. They should be within 12 inches of the walls on all sides.

Is a 5×7 rug big enough?

An 8’x10′, 6’x9′, or 5’x7′ would fit nicely, leaving ample room all around the bed. Two 3’x5′ rugs or smaller would also work perfectly on either side of the bed.

How far should a rug go under a couch?

A good rule of thumb to follow is that a rug should extend 12 to 18 inches beyond the furniture it’s underneath. In a sofa and chair grouping, this means the rug should extend 12 to 18 inches beyond the ends of the sofa. In a dining room, the rug should extend that far beyond the back legs of the dining room chairs.

Should an area rug be longer than the couch?

An area rug should be wider than the couch with a foot of space on either side showing. An area rug should have a minimum of 18″ of space around where the bare floor shows. The front legs of the couch and any accent chairs should be on the rug. All legs of a couch and accompanying furniture should be on the rug.

Should you put a rug under a coffee table?

It’s recommended to put a rug under a coffee table, as it helps ground the entire room, provides a great focal point, and can be used to add some contrast within the overall interior design theme. Placing a coffee table over a carpeted floor, on the other hand, is much like placing it on a bare homogenous floor finish.

What does 8×10 rug mean?

Normally this means adding 24” to each side of your table and selecting the next rug size up. See examples below. 8×10. An 8×10 rug is a good size for a table that sits between 6-8 people. All chairs should be able to stay on the rug while sitting.

How big is a 12×12 room?

144 square feet
How many square feet is a 12×12 room? The square footage of a room 12 feet wide by 12 feet long is 144 square feet. Find the square footage by multiplying the width (12 ft) by the length (12 ft).

How many inches is a 4 by 6 rug?

Rug Sizes
