Growing Strawberry Plants From Strawberry Seeds

Tiny strawberry seedlings in black pots

Growing strawberries from seed is more difficult than simply buying strawberries. However, it can also be much more rewarding. Once you have a growing strawberry plant, refer to itGrow strawberriespage for instructions on how to successfully produce a crop of strawberries.

Of course, growing strawberries from seed starts with choosing your favorite strawberry.Strawberry varieties. Once you’ve chosen the right strawberry variety for your garden and purchased strawberry seeds, you’re ready to plant. Be aware, however, that strawberry seeds from most strawberry hybrids will not reproduce to form. Alpine cultivars and heirloom seeds often will (as well as some newer F1 cultivars), so this factor will come into play when planting strawberry seeds.

Many strawberry seeds require cold treatment to stimulate germination. If your chosen seed requires it, never fear. It’s very easy. Just cover the seeds, put them in an airtight container and put them in the freezer. This simulates winter conditions and the warming period lets the seed know it’s time to live. After storing strawberry seeds in the freezer for two to four weeks, remove the seeds from the freezer. Leave them in a jar or container while they warm to room temperature.

Once your strawberry seeds are at room temperature and ready to plant, you need to create a suitable spot for your seeds to begin growing. A seed tray works well. Take the seed tray and prepare. A good mix to start with strawberry seeds is 3 parts peat to 1 part organic-rich soil. Spread it in your seed tray to a depth of about half an inch.

Moisten the mixture with water until it has an even moisture content. Sprinkle your strawberry seeds over the wet mixture, then cover the seeds with a very thin layer of peat moss. Make sure the strawberry seeds are not completely covered and exposed to light. Keep them indoors, in a well-lit room and in full sun, if possible. In two to three weeks, the strawberry seeds will sprout.

Keep the soil moist and well lit. Heat can help seeds germinate, so the top of the refrigerator or on a heating pad on the bottom may be suitable places for seeds to germinate. If strawberry seedlings are not in direct sunlight with supplemental light, consider providing supplemental artificial light. Shop lamps or fluorescent spotlights will do. Place the light source 3 to 4 inches from the seedlings and increase the light as the strawberry plants grow. If strawberry seeds grow too close together, thinly prune them when they are 1 to 2 inches tall to retain the largest, most vibrant seedlings. Gently transfer the strawberry plants to a larger container or pot once they have sprouted their 3rd leaf.

Weather permitting, strawberry seedlings can be planted directly outdoors, or seedlings in containers can be replanted outdoors. If strawberry seeds are grown indoors, the young strawberry plants should be hardened off before planting them outdoors. When temperatures rise into the 50s, begin to shade the plant for a few hours a day. Gradually increase the time the plant is outdoors, eventually leaving it outside overnight when the weather permits. Start exposing them to the sun for longer periods to finish hardening off before planting them. This ensures that your plants are not damaged or dying due to changes in their environment.

Save Strawberry Seeds

If you want to grow strawberry plants from seed, you can consider saving heirloom seeds from year to year (heirloom strawberry seeds are the same as non-hybrid strawberry seeds). Luckily, it’s relatively easy to learn how to save them so you can start growing strawberries from the seeds you’ve saved. Here is an easy way to save your seed:

Put your ripe strawberries in a household blender. Add a cup of water to strawberries in a blender and blend on high heat for 3-5 seconds. Try not to stir for more than 5 seconds or the seeds may be damaged. Let the ingredients sit for a minute or two. Viable seeds will sink and non-viable seeds will float with the strawberry pulp. Once the good seeds have settled to the bottom, pour in filtered water to remove the bad seeds and pulp. Rinse the seeds then transfer them to paper towels (or a low heat dehydrator) to dry them. Once dry, store them in a cool, dry place.

If you prefer to use the no-grinder method, you can try the strawberry seed saving method instead. If you are dehydrating your strawberries (or letting them dry out completely), you can use your thumb and forefinger to rub the strawberries to loosen the seeds. Separate the moringa seeds and store them in a cool, dry place.

Or, if you still prefer another method, you can also use a sieve. Take a strawberry, squeeze the pulp through the sieve, the seeds into the sieve. Wash the seeds, dry them and save the strawberry seeds for later planting.

Strawberry Seed Information

The relationship between birds and strawberries may be due to the prevalence of strawberry plants in the temperate world. It’s clear that birds love to eat strawberries, and the seeds usually pass through their digestive tracts intact and undamaged. When birds defecate, they sow strawberry seeds which can live far away.

Interestingly, there are about 200 strawberry seeds that decorate the outside of a strawberry. And, although often referred to as “berries”, strawberries are not true berries like blueberries and blackberries, nor are their seeds “seeds”. The delicious strawberry flesh is known as the appendix, and the tiny seeds we call “strawberry seeds” are actually the fruit itself. The berries actually contain seeds. The fruits containing these seeds are called “nuts”. An achene is also sometimes called an “achene”, “achenocarp” or “achenium”.

Delicious strawberries are also unique in another way. Scour the earth if you will, but you won’t find another fruit with seeds on its outer surface!

Strawberry seeds: conclusion

Strawberry seeds beget the strawberry plant which produces the strawberry we all love.
