What is the main control panel?

According to the NEC (National Electrical Code: Article 1 00-Definition), the main control panel (also known as control panel, load center, circuit breaker and distribution panel, etc.) is a cabinet or enclosure circuit breaker. and protective devices (such as circuit breakers, fuses, switches, etc.) that are used to control and protect lights, heat, and electrical circuits. The control panel is only accessible from the front and is installed/mounted on a wall or other solid structure.

The main control panel is the first line of defense against electrical faults and other faults (short circuit, overload, overcurrent, etc.) to protect electrical equipment and prevent dangerous electrical shock and fire.

The main control panel is directly connected to the power cables (from energy meters and pole-mounted distribution transformers). Wiring Install 60A Subpanel for 120V

The following wiring diagram shows the installation of the 60A subpanel for 120V and 240V. You can use the rated current according to the system requirements, i.e. 50A, 60A, 100A, 150A, etc. We have used 60A for illustration purposes only.

As shown, a 60A double pole circuit breaker is fed from two live busbars on the main panel. The output wires such as (L1 = Hot 1 (black) and L2 = Hot 2 (red)) of the double pole circuit breaker are connected to two bus bars in the sub-panel, L1 and L2.

Similarly, the neutral “N” wire and the ground “G” wire from the main panel go into the sub-panel and connect to the neutral terminal and the ground terminal respectively.

This sub-board can currently supply both 120V and 240V to branch circuits via single pole and double pole (CB 15A, 20A or 30A).

Wiring Installation of 150A sub-panel only 240V

The following wiring diagram shows the installation of the 150A subpanel for 240V only. We used a typical 200A double pole breaker in the main panel box while the total capacity of the load circuits was 150A.

As shown, a total of three wires enter from the main panel (double pole breaker) to the 240V sub-panel via Hot1 “L1”, Hot2 “L2”, and Ground “G”. You may notice that there is no neutral wire in the subpanel. This is because we are only running the 240V circuit and the white neutral is no longer needed.

If we need to run a single phase 120V circuit or a 240V 2 pole GFCI breaker, we will connect the white neutral wire from the main service panel to the subpanel box.
