What is a pool slide?

Pool sliders are found in every swimming pool and are considered one of the most important features. The rectangular openings located on the side of the buried pool are called built-in skimmers. There are also robotic or automatic slides that cling to the edges of above ground pools. Depending on the size of the pool, you can install one or more skimmers.

Pool slides are designed to draw water from the surface and through the pool’s filtration system. About the top 1/8 inch of water is drawn into the skimmer, which helps remove dirt and debris like sunscreen, hair, and pool leaves before they sink to the bottom. This happens without most swimmers even noticing because the sucking is so sporadic.

Without a working skimmer, debris and chemicals will not be properly removed from your pool. This will increase the likelihood of a cloudy lake and algae growth. Also, your pool pump will be subject to wear and will likely need a good replacement before the manufacturer’s recommended date. Replacing a pool pump can be an expensive exercise, so maintaining your pool filter is essential.

Pool Skimmer Components

pool skimmers and maintenance

Pool slides come in a variety of sizes and performance will vary depending on the model you choose. However, no matter what brand of skimmer you install, they come with the following parts:

Lid:The cap is a visible part of the skimmer and is used to prevent large debris such as twigs from being sucked into the pool’s circulation system. They also prevent you from jumping into the skimming basket.

The mouth:The mouth is the opening inside the pool. Water and debris are sucked in to be filtered through the mouth.

Dyke:The dam is the louver located inside the skimmer mouth and rotates with the flow of water. The main purpose of the dam is to prevent debris from escaping into the pool. When the pool pump is turned off, the smart dam goes into the closed position to prevent debris from returning to the pool.

Skimmer basket:The sediment filter basket or strainer collects debris before it is sucked into your pump. This is an essential component of the skimmer because without the basket, debris will clog and damage your filtration system.

Suction line:The suction line is connected to the skimmer basket and is the determining factor of the power of the skimmer.

Balance line:The balance line prevents the skimmer from drawing in air if the water level drops below the main inlet.

How to maintain your skimmer

Cleaning your skimmer can help ensure that it is performing optimally and will prevent unnecessary damage to your pool’s filtration system. A clogged skimmer basket will also require your pump to work harder to circulate the water, which ultimately reduces the life of the seal and the pump itself.

Maintaining your skimmer is simple to do by following these steps:

  1. Turn off the pool pump.
  2. Remove the skimmer cover
  3. Remove the skimmer basket and empty the contents.
  4. Put the basket back in the skimmer.
  5. Cover the skimmer and repeat with other skimmers if available.
  6. Once done, turn the pool pump back on.

You should clean the skimmer basket at least once a week to keep your pool clean and your equipment in good working order.

This is the Poolskim by Poolskim USA. So what it it exactly? It is a unique device that connects to your 1-1/2″ threaded return jet and turns that return line into another very powerful skimmer. It works amazingly well and will clean your pool surface of large debris before they fall to the bottom.

The set-up is fairly easy and for most pools everything you will need is in the box.

I also have an installation video:

For more information please visit their website:

The Poolskim has a self adjusting floating hat the will allow it to work when the water level gets high or low in the pool. If you have a pool with lots of surface debris and your skimmer gets clogged up the Poolskim would lighten the load reducing the strain on the pump. It is also very easy to clean and the debris bag is large.

All in all a solid product for your pool and one that will help keep it clean all year round.
