Loosen the old valve

loosen old water valve

Check the electrical system of the “jumper wire” that runs from a clamp on the house side of the meter to a clamp on the road side. If you can remove the old valve with the jumper wire in place, great. If you can’t,do not unplug it.The safest solution is to install a longer copper wire and two new clamps (6AWG for 100 amp service, 4AWG for 200 amp service). Then remove the short link jumper. At this point, you are ready to shut off the water and replace the valve.

Close the valve on the side of the road where the water enters the house. Then loosen the coupling nut and remove the knob from the old valve. To remove the old valve, you will need to undo the fitting on the “house side” of the water meter. There is usually a washer that seals the oil-soaked leather inside the coupling.
