Multi-read content water hammer arrestors where to install

Various methods have been proposed to size a water hammer. These methods have caused confusion about the proper size and placement of water hammer arresters among engineers, contractors, and others involved in the plumbing industry. To help clear up the confusion, the following article is excerpted from the relevant sections of Plumbing

Table 1

Size and position data

PDI members set out to establish a uniform sizing method for water hammer arresters. They funded a program of research and experimentation with the goal of creating a standardized method of sizing and placement. Such a method would benefit the entire plumbing industry.

you 2

PDI has developed a protocol to define different sizes of water hammer arrestors. Seven different sizes of water hammer absorbers have been developed. It is decided to determine the size of the arrester by code or symbol. The size is based on the ability of the arrester to control shock waves in various piping systems. The following symbols AA, A, B, C, D, E, and F have been created to indicate the water hammer size range. “AA”

Example 1

When PDI certifies and lists surge arresters for water hammer, each size is designated by one of the symbols to determine the correct size per PDI-WH201.

Example 2

Plumbing engineers are most familiar with sizing water distribution systems using the fixed unit method. Because it is a familiar sizing method, PDI used it to size water hammer devices. Quick and easy sizing method using fixed units. The fixed unit of water supply is defined as the dimensionless unit of the probability of simultaneous use of water in the water supply system of the plumbing system.

Figure 1

Table 1 lists fixed unit values of devices for various devices for hot and cold water supply. This table is used in the PDI-WH201 when sizing the water hammer protection.

Figure 2

These fixed unit values are common values that most engineers use to size their water distribution systems. These values can be used to size and layout water hammer protection devices fabricated simultaneously when the piping system is sized.

table number 3

In most installations with multiple fixtures, only one fixture is typically closed at a time. However, it is sometimes possible to close two or more fixed valves at the same time. Table 2 for sizing and selection considers all design factors including concurrent use, pipe size, length, flow pressure and velocity. Thus, Table 2 provides a simple and accurate method to determine the correct water hammer for each multi-device branch and automatically provides all the factors that must be considered or calculated differently.

Table 4

After calculating the fixed unit load for a given branch, Table 2 is used to determine the size of the water hammer. This table applies to both hot and cold water. This chart is based on a maximum water pressure in the arm of 55 psi. When the pressure in the branch exceeds 55 psi, the water hammer arrestor must be increased by one size. For example, a “C”

picture 3

Examples

Table 2 will help engineers and contractors select the correct water hammer protection for each application. Examples 1 and 2 show the relative ease with which sizing can be done using Tables 3 and 4.

Choosing the right size water hammer arrestor for a multi-fixed branch is relatively easy. Figure 1 shows a typical riser diagram of the type an engineer might include in his drawing set.

When sizing cold water and hot water branches, a fixed total unit load is established for each branch. This information is then applied to sizing charts to determine the required branch size.

Example rule 2

Appropriately sized water hammer arresters can be selected when the total number of fixtures for cold or hot water diversion is known. Simply apply the fixing units to table 2 and select the appropriate water hammer protection.

Engineers suggest identifying water hammer arrestors by the PDI symbols on the riser diagram as shown in the illustration. This will ensure that the contractor provides the correct dimensions when installing the water distribution system.

The recommended location for a water hammer arrester is at the end of the fork between the last two fixed pieces of equipment to be maintained. This location is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 5

The location of the water hammer protections illustrated in Figure 2 applies to branches not exceeding 20 feet in length, from the starting point of the horizontal branch to the final permanent supply on this branch. When the branch exceeds 20 feet in length, an additional water hammer protection device must be installed. Water hammer placement is based on industry experience developed by PDI.

Picture 6

Long life from pipeline to equipment

Most sizing and selection applications involve fixed single and multiple branches. These can be easily addressed with Table 2. The rest of the applications involve individual pipeline runs to remote equipment. Appropriately sized water hammer arresters for such applications can be determined using Tables 3 and 4.

Picture 7

When using long hoses to service remote equipment, the water hammer arrestor should be located as close to the quick-closing point as possible. At this place, the water hammer arrester controls the energy that develops and prevents the shock wave from the piping system. A typical example location is shown in Figure 3.

Figure 8

Examples of determining the size and location of water hammer arrestors for a single fixed piece of equipment and its branches are shown in Figure 5-8. For clarity, control valves, vacuum breakers and other necessary devices have been omitted from the illustration.

Popular questions about water hammer arrestors where to install

water hammer arrestors where to install?

Exactly where to place the hammer arrestor will depend on the actual piping arrangement. The best places are either close to the pump, isolation or check valve that is originating the hammer, or at more distant points where the pipe changes direction, for example at the top of a pump riser.

Can a water hammer arrestor be installed anywhere?

“Water hammer arresters shall be specifically sized and have sufficient volume of air to dissipate the calculated kinetic energy generated by closing residential or commercial faucets or valves. Arresters shall be installed on both hot and cold lines on the supply stops where applicable.

How do you install a water hammer arrester?

Do you need hammer arrestor for kitchen sink?

The general rule is that water hammer arrestors are required on all quick closing valves.

Can a water hammer arrestor be installed sideways?

Water hammer arrestors can be installed vertically, horizontally, or at any angle in between. The most important thing when installing an arrestor is to place it as close to the valve as possible.

When should a water hammer arrestor be installed?

Install water hammer arrestors to prevent clanking pipes

When a valve closes quickly and stops the flow, that momentum shakes and pounds pipes.

Can you install a water hammer arrestor upside down?

Yes, they have a piston that is sealed, so they can mount them upside down. 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Why do I suddenly have water hammer?

Water hammer is usually caused in high pressure (e.g. mains pressure) water systems either when a tap is turned off quickly, or by fast-acting solenoid valves, which suddenly stop the water moving through the pipes and sets up a shock wave through the water, causing the pipes to vibrate and ‘shudder’.

Do water hammer arrestors need to be accessible?

Do Water Hammer Arresters require access panels? It is always wise to provide access to any mechanical device that may need servicing or replacing during the life of the building. Can a Water Hammer Arrester be placed at the top of a riser and be effective? No.

Do water hammer arrestors wear out?

Stainless steel constructed (chamber-style) water hammers seldom, if ever, need replacing and are guaranteed for the life of the plumbing. Unlike piston-type units, which have moving parts, chamber-style arrestors have a proven track record, according to Jay R.

Do you need hammer arrestor with PEX?

The code states water hammer arrestor shall not be required on any valves where plastic pipe is used for water distribution piping, indicates that they are not required for PVC and PEX.

How do I stop my washing machine pipes from banging?

Adjusting Water Pressure

If one or both of the pipes supplying the washing machine has a shutoff valve, you may be able to curtail the banging by partially closing it. The reduced water flow will cause the washer to fill more slowly, however, and increase the time for a wash cycle.

What are hammer arrestors?

Water hammer arrestors are used to absorb the shock when water flowing in a piping system suddenly stops due to fast closing shutoff valves, dishwashers, and clothes washers. This action protects against annoying and potentially damaging effects of water hammer.

How do I stop my refrigerator from water hammering?

When you suddenly alter its flow by closing a valve, it sends shock waves through the pipes, causing a banging sound and potentially weakening joints. Plumbers stop the banging by installing a water hammer arrestor in the pipe near the valve from which the noise is emanating.

Can hot water heater cause water hammer?

Hardened water minerals and rust accumulate in hot water pipes over time. The consequences include water hammer noises because of the steam bubbles escaping the sediment buildup at the bottom of the water heater tank.
