move boards

If you’re having trouble with gaps in your wood floors, you’re not alone. Laminate flooring is basically wooden strips glued together, which may or may not be nailed or glued in place. Gaps in wood flooring are caused by the expansion and contraction of wood over a long period of time. Although large gaps in relatively new laminate flooring are relatively rare along the length of the plank, you may find that newer decks have gaps at the ends of the plank. Older floors, on the other hand, are susceptible to gaps, along the length of the board as well as at the end, due to the years of expansion and contraction the floor will have to deal with. Gaps in wood floors are not only unsightly, they can cause drafts and energy inefficiencies.

So how can you get rid of crevices in your wood floors? If your floor is not attached to the subfloor, you can try putting the boards back in place, working around the perimeter of the room, whereextended distancewill be left. If necessary, after putting the boards back in place, you can insert dowels on the edges of the room to prevent future slippage. You can also reduce movement in the floor by avoiding sliding furniture and heavy objects on the boards.

If this does not solve your problem or if your gaps reappear, there are three main methods to fill the gaps in laminate flooring, namely:

Use dust suppressant and turpentine.

Introducing the filler strip.

Insert color matched acrylic fillers.

Here’s an overview of how to do each.

Use dust suppressant and turpentine.

It is one of the most commonly used ways to fill small gaps (less than 5mm) in laminate floors. What you need to do is get sawdust the same color or at least the same color as your floor (unless you have sawdust left over from the floor installation, of cours). Once you have the sawdust, you need to mix it with a clear turpentine additive which you can buy at any of your home improvement stores or flooring suppliers. The consistency you’re aiming for is like thick putty, which you then pour into the gaps.

This method of filling gaps has the advantage of providing a smooth, color-matched end result and dries quickly. The disadvantage is that the mix can fall through the gaps where the soil is placed directly on the tie rods and it often becomes brittle when the soil is moved significantly.

Introducing the filler strip.

Filler strips are basically very thin strips of the same type and color of wood as the floor that you insert into the gaps. The great advantage of this method of filling the gap is that there is no risk of the strips falling off, as they will also be able to rest on the parts. In addition, the filler strips also produce a very stable and attractive end result.

At the end of either of these filling processes, you will need to sand the filled gaps to level the floor and prepare it for finishing (if necessary).

Insert color matched acrylic fillers.

Color-matched acrylic fillers are easy to find, at a good DIY store or your laminate flooring supplier, and are arguably one of the easiest ways to fill gaps in laminate flooring. Essentially putty, this method is fast, efficient and requires no sanding at the end. That said, the biggest challenge you might face with this solution is blobbing, so be prepared to experiment.

Some people prefer to keep the gaps, they believe that filling the floor will make it look fake like laminate or lino. Each to their own, personally, I say fill it every time.
