For most of us, a laundry day means washing a large amount of our clothes at 40°C. But there will be times when we need to wash our clothes hotter or cooler to get the best results from cleaning, while protecting the fabric.

Our guide to washing machine temperatures will help you decide what temperature to wash your clothes at, whether you’re washing jeans, whites, colored clothes or baby clothes.

If you are looking for a new washing machine, come directly washing machine reviews.

Can I wash my clothes at 20°C?

The answer is yes, you can depending on whether your clothes are yellowed or not.

Since 2013, all washing machines in the UK must have a 20°C option displayed on the control panel to help save energy.

When we tested the machine on a cotton program at 20°C, we found that lowering the temperature from 40°C significantly reduced operating costs – by 62% on average. This is because the washing machine needs less energy to heat the water in order to lower the temperature.

Although the cleaning power was slightly lower at 20°C compared to 40°C, we found that switching to liquid detergent was helpful and still sufficient for everyday cleaning.

If you wash at low temperatures, it becomes even more important to perform a monthly maintenance wash with washing machine cleaner.

Advantages of washing at 30°C

Washing at 30°C uses 38% less energy than washing at 40°C, which not only saves you a lot on your electricity bills, but also helps the planet.

More than a quarter of what? regularly use the 30°C programme. As you can imagine, this is the recommended setting for many delicate fabrics, such as wool and silk – always check the label, though.

Lower temperatures are also good to help preserve color dyed fabrics, althoughgood quality detergentcan also help with this.

Difference between washing at 40°C and 30°C

While a lower temperature is suitable for daily cleaning and saves energy, a 40°C wash is better for more stubborn stains. Like most of them? the limbs we need regularly use the 40°C temperature setting, which we base our testing on cotton and synthetic fabrics at 40°C on.

This is the temperature at which most clothes – whether cotton, linen, viscose, acrylic or otherwise – should be washed.

In our tests, a washing machine that scores five stars for cleaning 30% more stains than a one star model on a 40 degree cotton cycle.

What to wash at 50°C?

This wash is suitable for polyester/cotton, nylon, cotton and viscose blends, but there is no valid reason to switch to 50°C.

Most spots will be moved at 40°C and increasing the temperature will consume more energy.

Cost of washing at 60°C

A 60°C program generally gives slightly better cleaning than a 40°C program, especially when dealing with greasy stains and is ideal for bedding and towels. But there is a price to pay: running costs are halved if you wash at 60°C instead of 40°C.

You can wash at 60°C because you’ve heard it kills bacteria, but heat alone doesn’t. Some bacterial and viral spores are resistant to washing at 60°C.

You must combine a 60°C wash with a good detergent to kill these bacteria. It is therefore preferable to choose a good detergent, to treat the stains and to wash at 40°C to obtain a great cleanliness without too much running costs.

Does washing at 90°C kill bacteria?

This is the hottest wash program you’ll find on most machines and is only suitable for certain items – many wash labels don’t recommend washing at such high temperatures.

But does washing at 90°C really kill bacteria? The NHS website says you should wash underwear, towels and linens at 60°C to prevent the spread of germs, or at 40°C with bleach-based laundry detergent (we recommend using organic laundry detergent).

It says nothing about washing at temperatures as high as 90°C to kill bacteria.

At what temperature should I wash white clothes?

Separating white clothes from colored clothes is more important than the temperature at which you wash them. If you keep them separate, you have the best chance of keeping the color from other clothes from spilling into them.

The temperature at which you wash depends on how dirty they are, how durable they are, and how dirty they are.

If you only wash white laundry and other linens, 60°C is sufficient. If you have a dirty white rugby ball or football kit covered in mud, blood, grass and everything else on a Saturday morning on the pitch, choose a similar higher temperature.
