How to Use a Sink Wrench for Your Home Plumbing Projects

Many homeowners prefer to do minor plumbing jobs themselves. However, one project that often causes problems for our customers is the removal or installation of faucets. It sounds simple, but can quickly become frustrating if you don’t have the right tools.

Basin Wrench

In this article, we’ll explain why you should add an adjustable wrench to your toolbox and how to use it when working on faucets.

What is a spanner used for?

A sink wrench is a specialized tool for installing or removing sink faucets in kitchens and bathrooms. With its long shank, it is designed to reach into tight spaces under the sink and loosen or tighten mounting nuts that are hard to get with other tools such as a wrench or standard pliers.

The pot wrench key is a claw tip that can grip nuts. The head can be adjusted to rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on whether you want to loosen or tighten the nuts.

  1. Key adjustment

Before using the key, you must ensure that it is in the correct position (loose or tight). You’ll want to do this before you go down to the sink. To start, hold the key vertically so the tip is pointing up.

If you are trying to remove a faucet, the claw opening should point to the right. When you attach it to the nut (next step), you will turn the key counterclockwise.

On the other hand, if you are installing a new faucet or tightening an existing faucet, the tip of the pot wrench will point to the left and you will turn the wrench clockwise.

  1. Insert the key into the mounting nut

This is the point you get under the sink, which can be a cramped and awkward position. Take the sink wrench to the bottom of the sink and position it around the nut. The claw head should grip the notches in the nut. You can reposition the claws at any time to put yourself in a more comfortable position with the best leverage.

  1. turn the key

Using the T-bar (the small bar at the bottom of the key perpendicular to the shaft), use both hands to turn the key. This will give you more leverage than trying to spin the shaft. You can slide the T-bar to the other side of the shaft to position it where you have more space.

Grain removal can be very complicated, especially if it is old and corroded. If it’s really stuck, you can try a penetrating oil spray to loosen it up a bit.

A sink wrench can do several things to successfully loosen or tighten the faucet mounting nut. But once you get the hang of it, it can be a very useful tool for your home plumbing projects.

Even simple do-it-yourself plumbing projects can turn out to be more complicated than expected.
