Things to Consider When Buying Concrete Paint

Depending on your project and needs, different paints will serve different purposes better than others. Here are a few things you need to determine before buying the right concrete paint for you.

  • What color do you want to paint your concrete?
  • The vast majority of concrete paints produced today are practical grade first, meaning most are available in standard colours. If you’re looking for a concrete or cement paint to add pops of color, start with the brands that offer the widest range of paints.
  • How much will the surface be abused?
  • If you park your car in a garage, fix a lawn mower, or have naughty kids, you need to consider traffic and abuse of the painted surface. More expensive paints offer durability, but are also stain resistant, which can make it easier to clean up spills on floors and prevent staining from normal cleaning.
  • Will the surface be exposed to the elements?
  • Although all exterior surfaces are exposed to UV rays and water, some surfaces will be affected more than others. You may be painting an area not covered by the porch or side of your home that receives the most rain, hail, snow, or wind, which can wear down the poor quality paint.
  • Should I water or waterproof?
  • With the right concrete paint for patios, walls, floors and driveways, water will run off and not crack or damage the paint prematurely. If you are painting the concrete retaining wall or basement cement wall, the paint will need to be moisture and water proof, a specialist paint will need to be used.

See how to prepare concrete for painting with preparation being key to achieving the best result.

Follow these instructions for how to prep a garage floor for paint:

0:00 Introduction

0:38 Brush away all dirt and dust from the surface

0:44 If grease oil stains are present, pressure wash these away with a heavy duty concrete degreaser or cleaner

1:03 Check if the concrete is ready for painting by running your hand over the surface

– If it feels like 180 grit sandpaper or rougher, then you’re ready to paint

– If it feels smooth, then an acid etch is required

1:23 For etching the surface, mix 3 parts water with 1 part hydrochloric acid (adding the acid to the water) then spread it over the floor with the watering can before waiting 15 minutes before working it into the surface with a stiff bristle broom – bubbling should be evident

1:58 Thoroughly rinse the surface with the pressure washer and clean water, to remove all evidence of the acid mixture

2:12 Check to see if the floor is ready by applying masking tape to the surface then checking for any dust or concrete debris on the tape (if so, further cleaning is required)
