Multi-read content what is plumber’s tape used for

During your do-it-yourself plumbing projects, you may have come across a thin white tape wrapped around the pipes. The presence of this plumber’s tape, as it is sometimes called, is not only decorative. Learning how to use plumber’s tape – or Teflon – is crucial in a proper plumbing project.

Other names for this material – pipe thread tape, thread tape or PTFE tape. Simply put, calling it plumber’s tape is an apt description of its use and application. It is used to seal between gaskets and is also used to lubricate gasket joints for smoother threading and easier disassembly.

If you find that the pipe joint is leaking, it may be because the tape is worn or there is no tape at all. Pipe thread tape will help you with that, and it’s pretty easy to do too. After turning off the water, you will disconnect the hose from the joint. Remove any worn tape, then apply new tape.

You will want to wrap the tape around the wire in the opposite direction from where you screwed the spool back in. Wrap the tape around the seam about four to six times, starting with the second strand from the bottom. The tape must be burned with the thread before joining the pipe at the joint. Then turn the water back on and check for leaks.

For leaks that aren’t at the junction, a plumber’s tape isn’t ideal. Instead, for fractures, you should use silicone tape. This tape will help create a temporary waterproof seal while you search for a more permanent solution.

Once you locate the leak and know where it is, that’s where you’ll use silicone duct tape. Again, turn off the water first, then dry the area as best you can. Wrap silicone tape around the leaking area, overlapping it several times and as tightly as possible. You can extend the wrap to the surrounding area of the pipe to seal that area.

Tape can last for years when properly applied, but may need to be replaced after it wears out or when you notice a leak. However, silicone tape is only a temporary solution. In this situation, this will only prevent the leak from getting worse, but will not completely fix the leak.

Knowing how to use plumber’s tape will make it easier and faster to complete DIY projects in your home, whenever and wherever. Not every situation can be fixed with duct tape, and that’s when you should turn to the professionals. For any help you need with the plumbing in your home, call Kellermeier Plumbing at 616-866-5134.
