One of the key elements in the design of a medium or low voltage electrical installation is to choose the right conductor for a given consumer. Therefore, in this article I will consider how the load is calculated and what kind of conductor you can use in different situations.

To calculate the load, we need to calculate the current flowing through the conductor. It can be calculated very easily thanks to the famous formula:

There is also an easier way to calculate amps and that is when you create a constant. Because240Vconstant will be1000W / 240V = 4.17.

Once you have that constant, just multiply the consumer wattage by that constant and you’ll get amps.

I=1.45*4.17=6.05A

For low and medium voltage three-phase power systems, the formula is:

Besides these conductors there are many others and that is why after calculating the load, before buying a conductor, ask the advisors in the store which is the right choice for you. Copper conductor is still better than aluminum conductor due to its better properties, but it is also more expensive.

When installing aluminum conductors, pay attention to two things:

Cut the conductor with a hand tool because if you cut it with a grinder for example, the lead may get dirty and you will not be able to place the cable lugs.

Do not bend the lead wire too much as it can easily break.

If the load is too much for one conductor, you can connect two conductors in parallel and thus the load will be distributed between them.

In conclusion, we can say that the calculation of the load and the choice of the right conductor for the electrical installation are very important because if you install the wrong conductor, it can cause a fire.
