Multi-read content what is an energy star rating

Do you want to reduce your energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint? One of the fastest ways to achieve both goals is to incorporate two words into your daily life: ENERGY STAR®.

Let’s take a look at the schematics and bolts of this program.

What is an ENERGY STAR? And what does the ENERGY STAR label mean?

Started in 1992 as part of the federal Clean Air Act, ENERGY STAR is a voluntary federal program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help people learn about many ways to save money and help reduce environmental degradation through energy improvements. Efficiency. Under this program, the EPA identifies and promotes energy-efficient buildings and products, all with the common goal of reducing energy consumption, improving energy security, and reducing pollution.

One of the main sources of pollution is the formation of greenhouse gases. According to ENERGY STAR, two-thirds of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States come from energy use in homes, buildings and industry. Therefore, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases entering the environment is a major goal of the ENERGY STAR program and its ENERGY STAR rating system. Clearly that made all the difference in this ENERGY STAR chart.

What does the ENERGY STAR label mean?

An important part of ENERGY STAR is the ENERGY STAR rating system, which focuses on three key areas: product, home (new and existing), and commercial enterprise.

Receiving an ENERGY STAR rating — which not all appliances have — means a product meets federal guidelines for energy efficiency. Instructions vary by product. The water requirements for dishwashers to achieve an ENERGY STAR rating are different from those for clothes washers.

The EPA establishes its product specifications based on certain guiding principles:

  • Product categories must contribute to significant national energy savings.
  • Certified products must provide the features and performance demanded by consumers, in addition to increased energy efficiency.
  • If the certified product costs more than the less efficient conventional product, the buyer will recoup their investment to increase energy efficiency by saving on utility bills, within a reasonable time frame.
  • Energy efficiency can be achieved through widely available, non-proprietary technologies offered by many manufacturers.
  • Product performance and power consumption can be measured and verified by testing.
  • Labeling will help distinguish the product effectively and be visible to the buyer.

Today, appliances and products in almost every category are available with an ENERGY STAR rating. The potential financial (and energy) benefits of purchasing an ENERGY STAR qualified appliance are evident when considering two common household appliances: the dishwasher and the clothes washer.

cost-of running-washing-machine cost-of-running-your-dishwasher

As you can see, replacing an older dishwasher and washing machine can save you around $300 a year in energy costs, depending on the model year of your appliance. Multiply those savings by adding other ENERGY STAR certified appliances and processes to your home, and it’s easy to see how you can end the month with more money in your wallet. ENERGY STAR offers adevice listwith an ENERGY STAR rating.

What does the ENERGY STAR label mean for a new or existing home or commercial property? New ENERGY STAR rated homes have followed certain energy efficiency and energy efficiency standards from the start of construction. For a new home to earn an ENERGY STAR rating, it must undergo a series of inspections, tests, and audits to ensure it meets strict federal requirements. According to ENERGY STAR, new homes built this way typically use 15-30% less energy than new homes built without certification.

Jumping into the ENERGY STAR consumer group is clearly a personal choice. It’s a choice that makes sense beyond the walls of a home or business. According to ENERGY STAR, if every appliance purchased in the United States this year earns an ENERGY STAR rating, we will:

  • avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions of 420,000 cars
  • save about 3 billion kWh/year in electricity
  • save $580 million in annual energy costs.
  • save over 25 billion gallons of water per year
