Overview of how to strip the wire

Safe and durable electrical connections start with clean and correct wiring. You must remove the outer plastic without cutting or cutting the underlying insulation or wires; otherwise, your connection may break or a short circuit may occur.

With just one outlet, you can strip almost any cord or cable using nothing more than a sharp pocket knife or utility knife. We’ll show you how to remove the cord safely and carefully. But for fast and precise stripping, we recommend using the specialized stripping tools that we present to you in this article. They are affordable, easy to use and produce high quality results. Be sure to choose a cord labeled for the type of wire you are working with.

All of the tools we show are available at home centers and electrical supply stores. Buy each as needed and you’ll soon have exactly what you need for any home wiring job.

How to strip the wire: Wires

Photo 1: Jacket marking
Form a circle around the cable jacket, but don’t cut all the plastic. This technique may seem dangerous, but it is safe as long as you apply very light pressure with the knife and keep your thumb on the opposite side of the string. Carefully guide the knife around the cable until you reach the starting point.Photo 2: Folding and breaking
Bend the cable at the marked line to break the plastic film. Fold it in the opposite direction to tear the other side and slide it out. Check the wire insulation underneath to make sure the blades aren’t touching them. If you see slices, cut the cable and try again.Photo 3: ropes
Align the wire with the groove that matches the gauge of the wire and press to cut the insulation. Then hold the wire with one hand while you push the bar with your thumb to remove the insulation.Photo 4: Alternative method to the knife
Cut the insulation all around the conductor. Then twist and slide the wire insulation. Check the holes and grooves in the wire.

A utility knife is best suited for removing the sheath on the wire. It takes a sharp blade, a steady hand and concentration to precisely control the depth of the cut. But once you master this technique, you’ll be amazed at how quickly and accurately you can remove the sheath from the wire.

We show the wire technique, but it also works on plastic shielded cables. Practice with your tongue outstretched (Image 1) or barely visible to see which technique works best for you.

When it comes to stripping individual strings, a wire stripper (image 3) is faster and more accurate, but in case of a snag you can use a knife (image 4). With all of these techniques it is crucial to control the depth of cut to avoid cutting or gouging the conductor.

Plastic coated cable

Photo 1: Band cover
Line up the plastic-sheathed cable with the groove that matches the gauge you’re using — 2/14 or 12/2 — and press down to cut the sheath. Slide the cover to reveal the wires underneath.Photo 2: Alternative method to the knife
Use a sharp knife to scrape off the plastic shell if you don’t have any special tools. Do not completely cut the plastic. Apply very light pressure with the knife and keep your finger on the opposite side of the cable. Bend and break the lid and slide it off.Photo 3: Pull the wire through the stripper
Separate each conductor by aligning them in the correct slot and pressing the conductor to cut through the plastic. Keep the stripper perpendicular to the string. Tilting the stripper can cause the strings to cut. Use your thumb to press down on the wire stripper to slide the insulation off the wire.

Stripping plastic-sheathed (NM, for non-metallic) cables is a two-step process. First you remove the outer plastic shell. Then you strip the individual conductors. There are many methods for removing the plastic coating, from simple knife techniques (image 2) to special tools. The stripping tool we use is unique in that it combines both jacket removal and wire stripping in one tool (image 1) and works great for both tasks. Well worth the money if you do any amount of home wiring. Otherwise, buy a cheaper regular peeler and use a knife (image 2) or another method to remove the outer skin.

Underground cables

Photo 1: Peel off one edge
Peel the plastic sheath from the wire underneath with a sharp knife. Run your thumb along the underside of the wire as you draw the knife along the top to remove a thin slice of plastic. This technique takes practice. If you cut the insulation of the wire underneath, cut that piece of cable and try again.Photo 2: Refit the cover
Expose a few inches of wire at the end of the cable. Grasp the ends of the wire with a wire stripper in one hand and the plastic sheath in the other, then peel off the sheath where you started to cut.Photo 3: Cut the excess crust
Slide the utility knife between the loose sheath and the power cord, then cut toward the unwrapped cable to remove the excess plastic sheath.

A special type of plastic-covered cable called UF (underground cable) requires a slightly different technique. Since the jacket wraps around each conductor, you can’t just burn it and slide it off. Photo 1 – 3 shows how to remove the UF cable.

This rope stripping technique takes practice to master. Build your skills before trying it on a real project. The key to successful wire cutting is controlling the depth of cut by keeping the blade angle low, nearly parallel to the wire. When you get it right, you should be able to feel the blade running along the top of the wire insulation below. Remember, if you pierced the insulation or wired the inside, cut the wire there and try again.

Coaxial cable

Photo 1: Adjusting the depth of cut
Test the depth of cut on a scrap wire. Adjust the two cutting blades in turn to fine tune the depth of cut. Turn the set screws clockwise with the Allen key (supplied with the tool) for a deeper cut.Photo 2: Location of the cable
Adjust the bar according to the size of your coaxial cable. Open the jaws and position the cable as shown. Check the icon on the tool handle to make sure the cut end of the cable is pointing in the correct direction. Rotate the cutter about five or six times clockwise.Photo 3: Remove the sheath from the wire
Remove the cutter and slide it out of the cutter slots. Use your fingernail to scrape the metal foil from the plastic insulation.

Adding an F-type connector to a coaxial cable requires a two-step or three-step strip on the end of the cable, depending on the connector. Carefully, you can make the strip with a utility knife, using the technique shown in photo 1 and a regular wire stripper. But the specialized tool we show here makes the job quick and precise. Read the packaging to match the strap to the type of coaxial cable you are using. The strippers you find at home centers work on common household coaxial cables.

Read the lettering on the jacket to determine if your coaxial cable is RG-58, RG-59, or RG-6, and adjust the slider on the cutterhead to suit your cable type. Make the cut and adjust the blades if necessary (Photo 1).

shielded communication wire

Cable puller
Use a wire stripper to remove the sheath from the communication wire.Photo 1: Cable Stitch
Slightly open the jaws of the top bar and thread the cable through the larger slot. Rotate the cutter clockwise. If it doesn’t mark the outer cover, move it to the next smaller track and try again.Photo 2: Remove the cover
Bend the cable to break the sheath. Then slide the grooved sheath out of the rope. Check the twisted pairs to make sure the insulation has not been cut.

With high-speed Internet access and home computer networks becoming more common, you may soon be installing new communications cables that can handle more bandwidth. Here’s an inexpensive tool that will help you succinctly remove the outer jacket from those tiny cables without cutting the inner conductor. The cable size tracks aren’t labeled, so you’ll have to experiment to find what works.

thin wire

Photo 1: Strippers wash up
This exhaust strips insulation from 16 to 26 gauge twine. Similar tools strip larger twine and solid wire.

Microscopic communication wires are difficult to remove without damaging and weakening them. It is important to match the stripper to the rope you are using. For example, you might be surprised to find that there is a special twine bar (Photo 1) that is only slightly larger than a strong twine of the same size. There are also bars for the little wires you find on doorbells and phone lines. Read the packaging before you buy to find the right stripper for your job.
