Multi-read content how to vaccum

Photo of modern living room and wood flooring with text overlay that reads "Are you vacuuming the right way?"

Once you know how to vacuum properly, your floors will be cleaner than ever and your carpets will also last longer.

Closeup of someone using a canister vacuum on a shag rug

Is your carpet starting to tarnish or darken around the edges of your baseboards? Have you noticed a lot of pet hair or dust in the air in your home? Maybe your house has developed an “old house” smell even though it’s newer. Or you start to feel like the vacuum cleaner isn’t working properly.

The problem may not be the age of your carpet or your home or even the fault of your machinery. You may be vacuuming the wrong way. If so, you’re not alone – most people do it wrong. I had no idea I was vacuuming incorrectly until years ago when a repairman showed me how to use the machine correctly. The difference is amazing – and since then my floors are so much cleaner. Now you can too.

The best way to vacuum your floor

There’s nothing wrong with rushing your vacuum through high-traffic areas when you have company or only have a few minutes to clean your house. But this kind of quick cleaning shouldn’t be your usual routine. To get the dirtiest dust off the floor — and around the house — you need to get your vacuum cleaner ready, prepare the area you’ll be vacuuming, and then take the time to do it right.

Step 1: Prepare your vacuum for use

Dirt and debris can reduce the vacuum’s suction power. This is why it is important to doRegular maintenance of your vacuum cleanerafter use. At a minimum, be sure to empty the dust bin before you begin. Or, if your vacuum uses a bag, make sure the bag is no more than half full. Next, check the brushroll or beater rod and make sure it spins freely. Remove any threads, hair or other debris tangled in the brush.

Step 2: Prepare the room for vacuuming

If you are going to vacuum, do it before you vacuum. The idea of cleaning is to move the dirt down and then out of the room. The easiest way to do this is to dust before you start vacuuming. Start with the highest surfaces, such as ceiling fans and furniture. Then go downdust your furnitureandbaseboards.

Vacuuming the room properly will go faster if you don’t have to stop to move furniture. So before you start, clear up any clutter on the floor. The fewer toys, chairs, or other objects you have to manipulate, the better. If you have a pet or live in a dusty area, you can also alternate weeks by moving small pieces of furniture that can be vacuumed underneath, such as a side table or plant stand.

Step 3: Use your vacuum attachment

First, use the machine accessories to vacuum the edges of the part. Even the best vacuum head won’t reach all the dirt where the floor and the wall meet. You will then see dark edges on the carpet at the base of the wall or if you have hard floors, gray lines. So switch to the flat vacuum attachment and walk around the room to get started. Also clean around the base of any furniture placed directly on the floor.

How to Vacuum icon

What is the suction attachment used for?

Use the vacuum’s dusting brush on curtains and blinds as well as baseboards. Upholstery accessories are best suited for soft surfaces, such as mattresses, sofas, and seat cushions. Use tools with long, angled crevices around baseboards and heavy furniture that cannot be reached by the main vacuum head.

For vacuuming carpets, switch to a roller brush, which lifts the fibers so that the machine’s suction can remove the dirt. Be sure to adjust the height of the brush head so that the brush contacts the surface of your carpet but does not crush it. If the brush is too high, it will not clean the dirt thoroughly. When the temperature is too low, it cannot spin well and hinders the suction of the machine. Some vacuums automatically adjust the height, but if not, you’ll have to do it yourself.

If you have hard floors, your machine should have felt or fabric rollers or a flat floor head without a rotating brush. These specialized vacuum attachments for hard floors better pick up dust and small debris from hard surfaces. Unlike carpet accessories, they won’t damage your hard floor surfaces either.

Step 4: Work slowly and repeat

Your vacuum needs time to pick up dirt – working too fast will cause dirt to fly. Even the best vacuum cleaner has to go over an area multiple times to remove the most dirt. So slow down and push the vacuum cleaner back then, without moving it sideways, pull it backwards. This gives your machine time to work through the dirt trapped between the fibers instead of settling for what’s inside.

Work from wall to wall, then rotate and repeat. This is where most of us don’t vacuum properly because we stop as soon as we step into the room. However, carpet fibers are spirals that can get dirty from all sides, so vacuuming in one direction won’t get them all clean. To vacuum properly, walk around the room in one direction, then turn around and vacuum again at a right angle.

How often should you vacuum?

In an ideal world, you could vacuum wall to wall twice a week and walk through high traffic areas daily. In fact, it depends on the type of soil and the use of a room.

Vacuum hard floors at least once a week.In addition to the weekly wall-to-wall vacuuming, go twice a week in the traffic lanes in most rooms. For busier rooms, like the kitchen, you might want to do this every day.

Vacuum the carpet twice a week.Carpet fibers hold more pet hair, dirt and bacteria than hard floors. To keep the carpets in your home clean, you should vacuum from wall to wall twice a week. If you plan to clean the floor, do so immediately after vacuuming. (Try minewaterless home floor cleanersafe for any type of hard floor.) If you have a busy home or pets, you can even vacuum areas with daily foot traffic.

Get in depth knowledge about how a Vacuum Cleaner works to keep your house neat \u0026 clean.

A vacuum cleaner works similarly to taking a sip of juice from a straw. As you suck the air out, juice from the glass takes its place. This is because you are creating a space of empty matter with your mouth. Since matter has a tendency to occupy space, the juice will flow upward and into your mouth so long as you continue to suck.

Now apply this theory to a vacuum cleaner. The boxy part of the vacuum cleaner has a motor inside it that does the same job as your mouth. The rotating fan of the motor creates a vacuum and begins to suck in air through the suction nozzle at the end of a pipe.

Any dust that comes within range of the suction of the nozzle gets pulled into the pipe and is collected in a bag. There is a filter inside that prevents the dirt that escapes from the bag from entering the motor. The two main types of vacuum cleaners are ones with a canister with a pipe attached to it or an upright one whose suction nozzle is at the bottom of the canister itself.

The next time you come across a vacuum cleaner, ask an adult to help you turn it on. Find different materials such as paper clips, a couple of coins, and a small pile of dirt. Test how close you have to go to the material in order for it to reach the grasp of the suction power.
