Multi-read content why do toilets clog so easily

Clogged toilets are messy and embarrassing, but repeated clogs only frustrate you. There are many different reasons why a toilet might be clogged and this is one of the most common questions we get.

Here’s our guide to some of the many reasons why your toilet may be prone to clogging.

1. Something is stuck there

Over the years we’ve taken a lot of weird things out of the toilet, usually toys. For a number of reasons, kids love to start their science careers by experimenting with home plumbing. If the water drains well, but something solid is stuck, the problem may be a foreign object.

Feminine hygiene products are also common culprits. If you have frequent visitors, make sure there is a trash can with a lid in a place easily accessible to the toilet. Maybe some women try to flush the toilet because they don’t know what else to do with it and are too embarrassed to ask.

The only things that should go in the toilet are body waste and toilet paper. No Kleenex, no dental floss, tissues or anything else. Additionally, plumbers around the world agree thatso-called “washable” wipes do not really wash. You can also try unloading a t-shirt.

2. You are using the wrong paper… or too much

Toilet paper is said to dissolve easily when it comes in contact with water, but not all brands dissolve well. We’ve seen expensive, “luxury” and cheap toilet paper brands refuse to disperse rationally. Some of the papers we’ve seen are almost as strong as newsprint… ouch!

If the toilet isn’t flushing even though you’ve just flushed it, there could be a buildup of toilet paper and organic matter somewhere in the pipes. You will need to try a plunger, a snake, or have a licensed plumber practice with a professional snake.

If you end up with a congested TP, switch brands immediately. You can also try rinsing before wiping to find larger deposits.

3. Your diet needs more fiber

Although we are plumbers, not doctors, it is clear that some people with a diet high in meat can produce very solid stools that are easier to get stuck in. Some medications can also produce this effect. If the toilet doesn’t clog all the time, only when certain people use it, this could be the cause.

Try adding a few servings of vegetables and fruits to your diet each day. Talk to your doctor too, as it’s not good for your internal waterlines either!

If there’s no way to fix the problem from a sanitary perspective, you may need to invest in a power-assisted toilet with more flushing power. You often see them in public restrooms where they can’t get clogged. The good news is that power-assisted toilets aren’t much more expensive than regular toilets, but they use more water.

4. Not enough water in your tank

If there is a problem with the water supply to the toilet, the tank may not be full. As a result, you don’t get the right amount of water in the bowl when flushing.

The easiest thing to check is that the water supply line button is fully open. You can also ask your plumber if your tank’s rubber float is set too low.

5. Poor toilet design

Like anything else, a toilet can be well or poorly designed. Although I have seen some complaints about low flow toilets, the problem is not limited to them and in fact many low flow toilets work well. Regardless of how much water is used for the flush, things like the width of the opening or “throat” of the toilet drain, the angle of the bowl, and other shape details toilet bowl can help or hurt. every flush.

When buying a toilet, look for one withMaP score of 500 or more. MaP is an independent organization that details toilets from all manufacturers.

6. Risk issues

Your drainage system needs airflow to function. This is to prevent the formation of a vacuum and to hold the waste water in place. You can find out more about how it works here.

If there is a problem with the vent pipe leading to your roof, pressure alone can prevent proper water drainage. Sometimes the vent is not designed or installed correctly, and sometimes there may be a blockage in the pipe, such as a pile of old leaves.

7. Is your water too hard or too chlorinated?

Hard water is water full of minerals like calcium. Over time, minerals will deposit inside the toilet bowl and especially inside the drain pipe. If your toilet is really old and constantly has poor flushing, that could be the problem. Ottawa has difficult water, but it is a problem that mainly affects rural areas where people depend on wells. You may need to replace the drain hose and invest in a water softener.

In the city, chlorine is added to our water to kill bacteria that can damage the plastic or rubber parts of your toilet. Imperfect seals in the toilet bowl can affect flushing ability.

If the plunger does not work, call a professional

As you can see, there are many things that can go wrong with a toilet.

If your toilet is clogged or has trouble flushing and flushing isn’t fixing the problem, you may need some work to get to the bottom of the problem. That’s when you need help from the licensed experts at DS Plumbing.

Why do American toilets block so easily?

Why does my poop clog toilets?

Extremely large poops may be the outcome of eating a very large meal or the result of chronic constipation that alters your bowel habits. If you’ve tried increasing your physical activity and upping fiber and water intake, and your poops still fill the toilet, it’s time to talk to your doctor.

Do toilets unclog themselves?

How long can a toilet stay clogged?

A toilet will eventually unclog itself if normal things like toilet paper and feces are stuck in it. It will take as fast as an hour for a toilet to unclog itself if the thing clogging it is easily degradable, or as long as over 24 hours if an abundant amount of organic matter clogs it.
