How to Create a Hooked Rug Wall Hanging that isn't DRooPY

This technique adds a wooden peg to the back of the hook rug

so that the mat does not sag in the middle when you hang it.

Supplies needed for wall mounting:

finished hooked rug, dowel rod, fabric pieces

Watch the video:

Cut the backing mat:

To cutcarpet fabricabout an inch all around.

A simple way to do this is to define a rule

lean on each hook edge of the rug and draw lines

along the edge of the ruler.

Then cut along the drawn line.

draw lines along edge of the yardstick

After cutting, slit the whole hook mat.

If you do not haveserger,

Finish the edges as you normally would.

I usedcloth monkat the base of this project,

but you can also complete this project with other rugs.

Press the background fabric to the back:

Press each of the four corners on the back of the project.

press corners back

And then press each side backwards.

Finally, press the top and bottom back.

Press sides to the back

Once all the edges are folded,

Press the edges with a damp press cloth.

This will help keep the edges on the back.

steam press rug

Sew the background fabric for the wrong side:

Pin the base fabric to the back of the crochet rug.

When pinning, be sure to pull the base fabric tight

so we can’t see it from the front.

pin backing fabric to the back

Sew the backing fabric to the back of the rug.

stitch backing to the back of the rug

Make bags:

Cut the rags into two rectangles –

four inches by five inches each.

Fold the rectangle of fabric in half, right sides together,

so it’s now four inches by two and a half inches.

fold fabric rectangles in half

Sew a quarter inch of seam along each short edge.

Tighten the corners of the folded side,

Flip the right side and press it.

Finish the rough edge by scalloping or rotating it less than a quarter inch and trimming it.

Repeat for the other rectangle of fabric.

Cut the peg bar:

Cut a dowel rod a few inches shorter than the width of the hook rug.

Diameter of wooden dowel

may be determined by the size of your project.

I am using a 3/8″ dowel for a 12″ x 15″ project.

3/8 works fine, but you can

use a smaller diameter dowel bar for a smaller project

and you may want a larger stud bar for a large project.

Sew the pocket to the mat:

Place two cloth bags on the back of the mat with hooks

in the two upper corners with a serrated edge at the top.

Place pockets on back of rug

Place the dowel on top of the fabric bags.

Center the dowel bar on the back of the mat with hooks.

add dowel rod

Make sure both bags are the same distance from the top

and on all sides.

Double each sachet.

fold pockets in half

Pin each bag to the mat.

pin pockets

Hand sew a pocket to the rug with hooks on the three sides,

Leave the sides open towards the middle.

sew pockets

Repeat the operation for the other bag,

but stop sewingPRIOR TOyou sew the bottom edge.

Insert the wooden dowel into the finished bag

and lift the remaining sides of the other bag to install the locking bar.

add dowel rod

Finish sewing the bag to the mat with the INTO pocket latch.

You now have a tapestry project with hooks that you can hang on the wall.

without sagging in the middle!

How do you hang a rug on the wall? This question was asked and is better answered in a video.

Hanging a rug on the wall is a great way to display your hooked piece. Some rugs just don’t seem right to be on the floor. My “Village of Pemberville” is one of those hooked rugs. The curved top makes some methods impossible. The method I prefer works just fine.
