Today I will set a consecutive record for a parallel circuit breaker. I’ll explain what they are, when they can be used, and how a home inspector can figure it all out. This is an updated version of an article I wrote for the ASHI Reporter in 2011.

First, a quick definition.A parallel circuit breaker is a double circuit breaker that occupies the space of a single circuit breaker on the panel. They are also called halves, flakes, doubles, half-heights, half-inches, doubles, and slabs, depending on local custom. Oh, and the scammers too. While double pole breakers are connected to two different poles on the panel and have a common run or tie rod to disconnect two poles simultaneously, parallel breakers do not.

The photo below shows a 60 amp double pole breaker at the top, then a 15 amp parallel breaker (marked), then a 20 amp parallel breaker (marked), then a 20 amp single pole breaker at the bottom.

Since parallel breakers allow two circuits to be installed on a panel in one breaker space, they are often used after the panel has been filled to capacity with a standard breaker. For this reason, they are often called “cheaters”.

Although misspelled, it is not cheating. You can absolutely use parallel breakers on any panel designed for parallel breakers, as long as they are installed in the correct places.

How do home testers determine if parallel breakers are allowed on the panel they are testing? There are several ways to do this.

Layer CTL Dashboard

The panels are subject to UL 67, which requires all lighting control panels and equipment to be Class CTL (Full Circuit Limiting). To help you determine if parallel interrupts are allowed, first consider the age of the console.

Before 1965:Old consoles prior to the CTL standard didn’t have a hard and fast rule on the number of breakers allowed. Sometimes the control panel has clear labeling, but usually not on these older consoles. In these cases, parallel circuit breakers may be permitted in each control panel space. These breakers will be labeled “For Replacement Only.” Not for CTL clusters. ”

Non-CTL Tandem Circuit Breaker

1965 to 2008:Here is an old formula for determining the number of circuits allowed in a CTL class panel to be created during this time. This formula is useful when inspecting older electrical panels that do not have a clear label inside the board. Take the amperage of the panel, multiply by the number of poles and divide by 10. Sounds complicated, but it’s not – let’s take a 100 amp panel as an example:

100 A x 2 poles = 200
200/10 = 20

Based on this formula, the maximum number of circuits allowed in a 100 amp 120/240 volt panel is 20. A 150 amp panel will allow up to 30 circuit poles and a 200 amp panel will allow up to a maximum of 40 circuit poles. For control panels not manufactured as “lights”

2008 to present:For the latest boards, you just do what the manufacturer tells you, and the labeling is usually clear. Previous versions of the National Electrical Code (NEC) limited the maximum number of circuits in lighting and appliance control panels to 42. The 2008 version of the NEC eliminated “lights”

Reject function

The Class CTL panel has various methods to prevent the use of Class CTL parallel circuit breakers in locations where they are not permitted. This is called “disabling features”. In the photo below, the bus stops are marked with knurling to allow the use of a parallel circuit breaker; These knurled bus crashes won’t let people pass.

Parallel circuit breakers are made this way in an effort to prevent people from using them improperly, but that doesn’t stop everyone. In the photos below you can see how someone broke the bottom of the circuit breakers to fit them where they don’t belong. This is probably where the term “cheating” comes from.

As I mentioned above, control panels manufactured before the adoption of the Class CTL standard allow the installation of non-Class CTL parallel circuit breakers. Non-Class CTL parallel circuit breakers do not have the “reject” feature that Class CTL circuit breakers have. As indicated by the label on the side of the circuit breakers in the figure below, these circuit breakers are not permitted in ClassCTL panels. The difficulty for home testers is that we often cannot see the mark once the circuit breaker is installed. The only way to see this, usually, is to remove the circuit breaker. And home inspectors should not pull circuit breakers while inspecting the home.

Does the control panel allow pairing?

Now that I’ve covered the general rules for parallel breakers, I’ll discuss how a home or electrical tester can determine when to allow parallel breakers to be used in different consoles.

Panel model

The panel model or part number will usually indicate if the panel is designed to accept parallel breakers and how many can be used. Here are some examples:

  • Up to 10 circuit breakers can be used in parallel.

I think it’s pretty easy to see this pattern.

The wiring diagram inside the control panel is a great way to determine if parallel circuit breakers are allowed, and if so, exactly.orThey are allowed. In the photo below you can see that the top four slots only allow a full size breaker, while the bottom eight slots allow a parallel breaker.

Another easy thing to look for is a label that saysmaximum number of circuitsTo allow. In the photo below you can see that only 20 circuits are allowed on the control board. This panel has 20 full size blanks, so parallel breakers are not allowed.

What are the problems with parallel circuit breakers?

When circuit breakers are used in parallel in locations where they are not permitted, they can create a poor physical connection to the busbars in the control panel, which can create a fire hazard. Parallel breakers also increase the total load on the busbars in the panel; This is when family inspectors need to use common sense.

When home inspectors find parallel circuit breakers being used in inappropriate locations, they usually recommend repairs to an electrician. If the control panel bus bars have been damaged or modified to permit the installation of circuit breakers in parallel, the appropriate repair is to replace the panel. There is no way for a building inspector to determine if the busbars are damaged without removing the circuit breaker, which building inspectors should not do.
