Multi-read content how big is a small bathroom

Are you planning to install a new bathroom? Before working on your project, think about the type of bathroom you want and the square footage you want. Understanding the size is an important step in determining what your home needs and what it can realistically support. Here are some common bathroom sizes and dimensions to help you in the decision making process.

What is the average bathroom size?

An average bathroom is between 36 and 40 square feet for an apartment or a small house. This size is a general size as it covers ¾ of a full bathroom as well as a full bathroom giving you just about enough room for the shower, tub, sink and toilet. For a larger home, the average size varies between 40 and 100 square feet depending on the size of the property.

large bathroom sizes.

Shared bathroom size layout

Here are common bathroom size layouts. Generally, the smallest size is 15 square feet, which can accommodate a sink and toilet. For a shower to be installed, you need at least 30 to 36 square feet. For a full bathroom that includes a shower and tub, you’ll need at least 40 square feet. Here are common small, medium, and large bathroom size layouts.

  • 3×5 (15 square feet)
  • 3×6 (18 square feet)
  • 4×4 (16 square feet)
  • 4×6 (24 square feet)
  • 6×6 (36 square feet)
  • 6×10 (60 square feet)
  • 6×12 (72 square feet)
  • 7×7 (49 square feet)
  • 8×8 (64 square feet)
  • 9×6 (54 square feet)
  • 9×8 (72 square feet)
  • 9×7 (63 square feet)
  • 10×12 (120 square feet)

Main bathroom size

The main bathroom is usually a full bathroom, but is often much larger for more space. Generally, the master bathroom is connected to the master bedroom, which defines them as such. A small master bathroom is 5×8 or 40 square feet, while the typical average is between 40 square feet and 100 square feet. A large master bath can measure up to 110-200+ square feet.

master bathroom layout.

Full bathroom size

The bathroom is fully equipped with a shower, sink, bath and toilet. It is only considered a full bath if it has all three of these and should normally be around 36-40 square feet due to size requirements or 5×8. As stated earlier, 5×8 is the size small, while 6×10 is considered average for a full bathroom, with 10×12 or more on the widest side.

full bathroom sizes.

Bathroom with shower or bath

A bathroom with a shower is often considered a bathtub, as it only has a sink, shower and toilet. The size of your shower will vary, but the smallest bathroom that can usually handle this will range from 26 to 30 square feet. Common sizes for this size are 9×3 or 8×4 covering a small range. The medium size is around 50 square feet with the large size landing around 60 square feet and up.

bathroom and shower.

Bathroom with walk-in shower

Bathrooms with walk-in showers vary in size compared to bathrooms with showers only. The only difference is that they have to be much longer to support a larger shower than other models which only have to support a typical shower stall.

The small bathroom with a walk-in shower is about 36 square feet, with typical dimensions of 8×4. For the purposes of most corner showers, the length should be at least about 4 feet to support the opening of the corner of the shower. From this point on, the size is the same as a bathroom with a shower – the medium size is around 50 square feet, the large size is 60 square feet and up.

bathroom with walk in shower.

Bathroom without shower or Bathroom with half

The most common layout for small apartments is a bathroom without a shower or a half bathroom. They are often considered wet rooms because they have exactly one sink and one toilet, with very little room for anything else. Generally, these types of bathrooms are at least 15 square feet.

They can get bigger, but no more than 26 square feet, because showers can often fit around that size and you’re wasting space at that point. To reiterate, 15 square feet for the small end, 18-20 square feet for the medium side, with 26 square feet on the larger side for a half bath.

bathroom with no shower

Disabled bathroom

Accessible bathrooms require at least 3×5 or 15 square feet to be considered an accessible bathroom. The size itself is not that important, plus the piece is 5 inches in diameter which allows a wheelchair to move freely without getting stuck. The door to this bathroom should be at least 32 to 36 inches or 2.5 feet wide. The sink should be no more than 36 inches high and no more than 2 inches of counter space in the middle. Finally, the toilet should be 17-19 inches off the floor. Handles should be no more than 44 inches above the floor. Safety bars and other armrests are also necessary for accessible bathrooms.
