Multi-read content how to block sound in apartment

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

No matter how long we’ve lived in New York, we can hardly get used to the sound of jackhammers, the screaming of children, or our neighbors being a bit loud, uh, grumpy on the side of the wall in our apartment. And with the noise complaints come a lot300 percentDuring the pandemic, many of us are actively seeking solutions to help stop (or hopefully silence) these urban incursions. From sound absorbing wall panels and curtains to white noise cancellers, we’ve rounded up some simple improvements to your soundproof home, as well as more drastic improvements that will help you achieve a quieter home. .

All of these products have been hand selected by the 6 Square Feet team. We may receive a commission for purchases made through these affiliate links. All prices reflect prices at the time of publication.

1. Cover the wall or ceiling

Wood and glass have an incredible ability to amplify noise in space. By adding soft surfaces to the room, you can absorb a lot of noise. Sound-absorbing materials like cotton, foam, and felt are ideal (that’s what musicians use for soundproof rooms), but they don’t always give the right look. A much more elegant solution is to apply materials such as decorative fabrics, patchesart, or sparse surface greenery. This may include decorating the walls withpictures and frames, add live wall or stickerswall tileor tapestries for a bolder look. Just keep in mind that some materials block out high-pitched and low-pitched sounds better. Ceiling partitions also work well. Today, they come in all sorts of fun, sculptural designs.

These hexagon bulletin boards are available in fun color palettes. Download and make a statement by covering an entire wall.
$29.99 for a set of 15 felt tiles (6″ x 6) at Amazon
These decorative acoustic panels are available in over 30 colors/patterns and are large enough – 12 x 12″ – to easily cover an entire wall or ceiling.
Starting at $34.95 for a set of 6 on Amazon
It may not be a living wall, but it looks like it and is suitable for apartments. Designed to look like boxwood, these 20″ x 20″ panels are easy to install and can be cut to fit a certain area.
$114.98 for a 12-piece set at Amazon

2. Add carpet

Following the same principle as above, adding rugs or carpeting to your floors will help keep sound from bouncing around. Rugs are also a great way to tie together a room’s decor, and if you have dogs or small children, your downstairs neighbor will certainly appreciate the smothered look of the animal or your overstimulated child. Use “high stakes” designs to really reduce noise.

3. Use a windshield and door seal

The crack under your door might not look like much, but it’s a great place for noise. Adding a door guard will help reduce unwanted noise. They’re also a great, inexpensive way to add some insulation to your home, keeping cold or warm air out, depending on the season.

For just $10, this three-ply design is better than most under-door seals for noise suppression and cold retention.
$9.99 on Amazon
If you want something removable, this sponge version is simple and easy. The removable cover is machine washable.
$18.95 on Amazon

4. Buy soundproof curtains

Many blackout blinds act as soundproof curtains, so you’re really getting a two-for-one deal here. Of course, windows are the obvious place to install them, but if you’re trying to block noise in the bedroom, for example, consider adding them as an extra layer behind the door.

This simple blackout curtain set also blocks noise with three-layer weave technology. Plus, they’re machine washable and have nearly 32,000 reviews on Amazon.
Starting at $35.95 for a pair of 42 x 84 blinds at Amazon

5. Add a shelf

Shelves and their thick, heavy books provide excellent soundproofing and will give any home – and its occupants – a more refined look. The bookcase also has the added benefit of extra storage, but don’t get too crazy about adding zippers and other knick-knacks. Too much headroom and ventilated surfaces counterproductively block your noise.

This gravitational unit is wider than most and also has geometric problems.
$267.99 on Wayfair
If you don’t have the floor space for a standing cabinet, adding groups of wall shelves can also help.
$28.99 for 3 sets of rustic wooden hangers at Amazon

6. Upgrade your windows

For those who own their homes, windows are an upgrade that could be worth the investment. Newer windows offer thicker glass and better noise and weather insulation when properly treated. Indeed, some windows currently on the market can block up to 95% of the sound. Two of New York’s biggest names areTesting the cityandCitiCalm.

However, window replacement can be very expensive, especially if you have unusually sized or unique windows that require customization. One way to find out if your window swap is worth it is to hire an acoustic consultant (we foundBrooklyn insulationin our hunt). They can take expert advice and let you know if you need a complete window overhaul or if you just need glue to seal the cracks around your windows.

7. Buy a white noise machine

If all else fails, drown out the noise with another less annoying noise. White noise machines (like you’ll find in a doctor’s office) are inexpensive and compact.

In addition to white noise, this popular machine has the option of six soothing nature sounds.
$20.08 on Amazon
Although this model is aimed at children, the soothing night light, LED clock and alarm make it ideal for adults as well.
Hatch Rest Sound Machine, $89.99 at Amazon
