8 easy ways to repel flies naturally:

The best way to get rid of flies.

House flies. Image credits:Hafiz Issadeen

In my years of working in pest control, I have witnessed all sorts of home remedies to try to ward off flies. Although they work on a small amount, there are usually no long term effects. Not attracting them in the first place is really the best “repellent”. This is true even when trying to treat all types of flies (house flies, fruit flies, horseflies, whiteflies, etc.).

We at Insight Pest strongly recommend that you use the remedies and treatments below to help keep flies away. All methods are approved by our team of experts and are safe for your family and the environment. As mentioned before, one main thing to remember is that the most effective way to keep flies away is to make sure your home isn’t set up to attract them in the first place. This could mean cleaning certain areas more often than you normally would. We hope the tips below will help you get rid of annoying flies in your home. If you need more help, you can always contact one of our pest control experts.

How to Get Rid of Flies Naturally Without Using Pesticides

When we talk about how to get rid of flies naturally, what we really want to know is how to get rid or get rid of flies without using pesticides. Here are some tips for getting rid of flies.

1. Hang a water bladder on the porch to keep flies away

This is supposed to reflect light and pop the fly’s eyes, but it won’t work or be enough to make a difference for more than a few flies. The number of bags you need to lug around the house for effect will probably seem amusing to most people.

2. Smoking with a citronella candle

Lemongrass is an excellent fly repellent, but it only works in a small area per candle. The number of candles needed to be effective would be expensive so it’s not really a viable solution.

3. Use a fly trap

Since fly traps attract flies, the best way to use fly traps to repel them is to place them as far away as possible from where you don’t want them. You can mix some sugar water to attract a few flies to the trap. Once the fly is trapped and dead, the dead fly will begin to become an attractant for live flies. DIRTY!

4. Install a yellow bulb to repel flies

Everyone’s seen those yellow bulbs, right? Studies have shown that yellow is the number one color that repels flies. Unfortunately, you’ll have to completely surround your house with yellow bulbs for this to have any real effect.

The most effective way to repel flies

5. The BEST way to REPEL flies is to not attract them in the first place.

Flies are attracted to many things, but I want to focus on the things that are most likely to attract them. Eliminating these attractants will go far more toward any fly control than any repellents you might use.

6. Clean trash cans thoroughly and often

This is by far the biggest fly attraction. This is where the flies go to lay their eggs to hatch those nasty maggots that give us all a bit of a hangover. The most important thing you can do is keep your trash can clean.Hard money holdingssays cities with high humidity and populations like Miami, Florida have struggled with this. Outdoor trash cans with even a little rotting trash are enough to attract flies. Clean all trash cans thoroughly and often.

7. Clean up pet feces/waste in your cage

Flies love poo! Cleaning up after animals in your yard will go a long way in controlling flies

8. Use green bulbs to locate flies

Flies may hate yellow, but they love blue. A recent study at the University of Florida for the Department of Defense found that flies are more likely to be attracted to something blue. So if you are going to use one of the light traps with a blue light, be sure to hang it as far away as possible from where the flies are causing a nuisance. This will attract flies there and away from where you don’t want them.
