Should I boil sugar water for hummingbirds?

sugar water for hummingbirds recipe and ratioRhonda Horrall politeness

“Is it necessary to boil the sugar water mix for hummingbird feeders? I just stirred until the sugar was dissolved. I always wondered if it was safe to prepare my recipes for hummingbird food without boiling it,” asks Amy Kernes of Brea, California.

Opinions differ on the importance of boiling the hummingbird food mix. We always boil water to neutralize some impurities that may be present in water or sugar. Also, sugar is more soluble in hot water. But as soon as the feeder is outside, contaminants seep into the water, carried by hummingbirds, insects or just a breeze. So at best, boiling the mixture will keep it fresh for a bit longer. If your water is good and your time is limited,Thoroughly wash the feederand often more importantly, bring the sugar water mixture to a boil.

Using very hot water is usually enough to dissolve the sugar. However, if you plan to make more hummingbird sugar water to store in the refrigerator or if the water is of poor quality, it is best to boil it.
