Got some naked popcorn you hate but just don’t want to get rid of? These 5 ways to cover the ceiling with popcorn will help hide the ugliness.

how to cover popcorn ceilings

It seems like a lot of homes these days (including my builder grade home) have popcorn ceilings installed in most rooms.

I really hate naked popcorn!!

But trying to get rid of it is messy…and it doesn’t always give you the results you expect.

Friends of mine removed popcorn from their ceilings only to find the plaster walls below were all wavy. I guess the installers thought they didn’t have to do a good job because they would get “popcorn” anyway.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that ceiling covering is the way to go!

Keep reading to discover my list of 5 ways to cover your popcorn ceiling…hopefully at least one of these will help you “remove” your ugly ceiling.

Cindy of edithandevelynvi Movie.com completely transformed this master bedroom by installing wooden planks just above the popcorn ceiling.

The laminate is so beautiful and you would never know there was ugly popcorn underneath.

2 | Installation of false sheet metal ceiling tiles

Ceiling tiles painted to look like tin

Faux Tin Ceiling Tiles* is one of my favorite ways to cover the ceiling with popcorn.

They come with designs already embossed and are super lightweight.

Which means they are very easy to install.

All you have to do is paint them (the color of your choice!) and stick them on.

I’ve covered them on the ceiling of more than one room in the house and love the way they look.

Not to mention that you can complete an entire project in less than a day. Goodbye popcorn!

3 | Cover the popcorn with a cloth

Ceiling covered with fabric via houzz.comFabric Ceiling via houzz.com

Covering the ceiling with fabric is another DIY project that isn’t too difficult to install, but requires lots of fabric. Here are the high-level steps to implement this interface:

1. Sew the sheets together to achieve the length and width of the piece plus some extra fabric (depending on the slant you want).

2. Sew the curtain rod pockets around the 4 outer edges of the sheet (same as the top of the curtain).

3. If you are installing over a fixture like this, you will need to drill a hole in the center of the fabric (and its hem) so that it can be fitted around the fixture.

Using ceiling medallions around the lights will help cover the edges.

If you’re not installing through a fixture, this hole isn’t necessary, but you may still want some sort of medallion that will secure the fabric in the center of the room.

4. Install curtain rod brackets from the ceiling to the top of each wall.

5. Push the fabric bags onto the curtain rods.

6. Attach the curtain rods to the brackets.

7. Lift the fabric in the center of the room and anchor it to the ceiling with your light fixture or medallion, making sure the fabric is centered in the room.

5 | Painting patterns on the ceiling

Popcorn ceiling with a gingham pattern painted on it

The pattern on your ceiling doesn’t actually make the popcorn disappear…but it does provide a distraction.

You are so absorbed in admiring the beautiful pattern on the ceiling that you don’t notice the popcorn.

I’ve done this successfully in a few rooms in my house…gingham ceilingin my master bathroom above is one of them.

Stripes painted on a bonus room popcorn ceiling

This pattern of stripes and leaves is another.

Just be sure to use matte paint, as any varnish will make those bumps stand out more.

Yes, these are my ways of covering the ceiling.

Hope you found the inspiration to easily get rid of your own popcorn ceiling.
