Multi-read content where do you place smoke detectors

You can be diligent about unplugging appliances and keeping an eye on your candles, but there are dozens of reasons household fires happen – electricity, radiators, faulty appliances, cooked food – and mistakes happen. . You can never be too careful when it comes to your safety.

The average US fire department responds to a home fire every 88 seconds. With over 300,000 fires occurring each year, the majority of which occur in residences, fire protection is essential.

While we often write about home warranty topics likeBest home warranty, we decided to change direction. We’ll show you how to install the right smoke detectors in the best places in your home, make sure they work, and if a fire does break out, learn the best safe response. .

Where to place smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

The location of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is just as important as having a working alarm system, so be sure to think carefully when installing your detectors. For example, one apartment for a three-story house is not enough. Set an alarm in the hallway on the second floor, but forgetting to set an alarm on the first floor near the kitchen is problematic.

Laws vary from state to state, butNational Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72® National Fire Alarm and Signaling Coderequires at least one smoke detector in each bedroom and one outside each bedroom, and in any case, one on each floor of the house.

We recommend placing detectors in all major areas of your home, including basements, dining rooms, offices, children’s playrooms, and even on your porch. On average, more than 9,000 home fires in the United States are caused by ovens.

Detectors should be located no more than 12 inches from the ceiling, at least 10 feet from kitchen equipment, and no more than 20 feet from a bedroom. Do not place smoke detectors on vaulted ceilings. If you have vaulted or A-shaped ceilings, you’ll want the detector placed high up in the ceiling, not on the wall. Placement of a smoke detector can be difficult with high ceilings and may require a professional, ladder or wired alarm system.

A smoke detector locator map is highly recommended to ensure your detectors are up to date. You can find them online, detailing exact locations and distances.

A carbon monoxide detector may not be required in all states, but the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends installing one in the hallway outside your bedroom. If there are multiple sleeping areas (one upstairs, one downstairs), you will need one for each.

Before installation, you must ensure that you follow the instructions supplied with the CO detector. There is a myth that carbon monoxide detectors should be placed in low areas of the house, but that is not true. You may want them plugged into outlets near the floor to make them easier to read, but this is not necessary for the detector to work properly.
