Multi-read content when is the best time to pour concrete

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to pour your new concrete patio, then September could be the time to seize the moment.

The key to perfect concrete placement is (among other factors) avoiding the weather. Unless you’re a seasoned professional, that pretty much rules out months like July and January, when the temperatures are either boiling hot or freezing most of the time.

Here’s why: In cold weather, water in wet concrete will (predictably) turn to ice, expand and cause cracks in your brand new surface.

To combat this, some contractors will take steps to set the concrete before dark and the temperature drops drastically, such as using hot water to mix, adding quick-drying chemicals, or even using hot water to mix tents and heaters. However, this is definitely not a job for amateurs.

In hot weather (i.e. temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit), you run into a host of different but equally dangerous problems. The problem is not the temperature itself; Unlike plastic or chocolate, concrete melts in the sun. The real problem is that the top of the concrete will harden faster than the bottom, causing a Civil War-style split where the top shrinks while the bottom stays still. The result: a wobbling, shaking concrete slab that isn’t quite right.

Of course, concrete can still be poured hot, if you know how to prevent this drying process. This can be done by using extremely cold water to mix the concrete, then keeping the slab moist with a sprinkler or damp burlap for a few days. However, it takes a practical eye to tell if the concrete is hardening too quickly.

With extreme weather and freezing conditions ruled out for the best possible results, allow spring and fall for optimal concrete pouring. April and May tend to be critical months for concrete work, with temperatures stabilizing above freezing but often not climbing into the 90s.

However, rainy conditions can present challenges, as too much moisture on freshly poured slabs can weaken the final product. And since May is the second rainiest month of the year, chances are Mother Nature will decide to ruin your plan.

With generally mild temperatures and a lower percentage of rain, September won the competition for the best month of the year for making concrete. So if it’s July and you get a picture of a freshly poured driveway, you might want to wait a few months for the concrete rush hour.

Of course, Shamrock Construction Solutions will be happy to take on your concrete projects any time of the year. We are experts in installing driveways, paving slabs, walls, foundations, yards, sidewalks, steps, curbs and more, so if you want to make sure your project is solid, please contact us today.

Popular questions about when is the best time to pour concrete

when is the best time to pour concrete?

So, the ideal season for pouring concrete is during the cool to moderate months of the year. Depending on where you live, this could be the spring, fall, or even the winter for individuals living in very warm locations. Ideally, the temperature should remain within 50 to 60°F for most of the day.

What is the best month to pour concrete?

With its generally mild temperatures and lower rates of precipitation, September wins the contest as the best month of the year for concrete work. So if it’s July and you’re having visions of a freshly poured driveway, you may want to wait a couple months for concrete-pouring primetime to come around.

What is the best temperature to pour concrete?

Experts agree—the best temperature to pour concrete is between 40° – 60°F. When temperatures dip below 40°F, the chemical reactions that strengthen concrete slow down and can lead to weaker concrete.

What happens if it rains while pouring concrete?

HOW DOES RAIN AFFECT CONCRETE? Rain falling on top of freshly laid concrete can damage the surface and compromise a level and floated finish. Even worse, if too much extra water works its way into the concrete mix, this can result in weak concrete overall.

What temperature can you lay concrete UK?

Any concrete must be prevented from freezing so all freshly placed concrete must be protected straightaway. The temperature of concrete should not be less than 5ºC when delivered.

How late in year can you pour concrete?

While concrete can be poured at any time of year and in nearly any location, there is an ideal range of temperature in which to pour concrete, and if it’s too cold or too hot outside, you will need to account for that while using the material.

Is it OK to pour concrete in cold weather?

If outdoor temperatures fall below 25 degrees Fahrenheit the concrete will most likely freeze. A concrete popsicle is never a desirable outcome because it can compromise the overall durability and strength by up to 50%. Protecting the concrete from freezing is the highest priority for at least two full days.

How long does 4 inches of concrete take to cure?

Your concrete should be solid enough to walk on, without leaving footprints, after anything from 24 to 48 hours. By seven days, your concrete should be cured to at least 70 percent of its full strength.

Can I pour concrete at night?

Plan to pour concrete before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m. in order to avoid the hottest part of the day. If you are concerned about the temperature while working on a summer project, consider pouring concrete at night to give the mixture the best chance to harden and cure before the sun comes up.

What temp does concrete stop curing?

Concrete retained in forms or covered with insulation seldom loses enough moisture at 40 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit) to impair curing. However, drying from low wintertime humidities and heaters used in enclosures is a concern.

Can I pour concrete over 2 days?

How long you have until you must take into account other considerations for concrete to self-bond; about two hours maximum. After that, it’s way beyond ‘begun’ to set. Your previous pour should have left some rebar sticking out, if you knew it was going to take multiple days pours.

Can you lay concrete in the rain?

Pouring concrete in the rain can compromise its strength, increasing the tendency for dusting and scaling to develop. Once the damage is done, it can be hard to rectify and will often ruin the appearance of the finished surface. Don’t let it rain on your parade.

Can you pour concrete if it freezes at night?

If nighttime temperatures are below freezing, the water in the concrete will freeze and expand, causing cracks. Additionally, if temperatures reach below 40 °F (but not freezing) during set time, concrete will take much longer to reach required strength.

What is minimum temperature for laying concrete?

5 degrees Celsius
The design code BS 8110 required that concrete should not be exposed to temperatures of below 5 degrees Celsius until the strength of the mixture has reached at least 5 MPa.

Should you pour concrete in November?

THE WEATHER THE DAY OF THE POUR

Fresh concrete or “plastic” concrete will freeze if the air temperature falls below 25 degrees F (-4C).

This video will show you when to start finishing concrete after you pour it.

If you’re pouring a concrete sidewalk, patio, walkway, pool deck, or driveway, this video will teach you when to start edging, mag floating, and broom finishing the concrete.

Finishing concrete at the right time will be the difference between a really nice looking job and a not so nice looking job.

Knowing when to start is a matter of understanding how concrete reacts to a number of different factors.

Some of those factors are air temperature, how wet or dry you pour the concrete, sub-base material, if the concrete is in the sun or shade, just to name a few.

In the video I show you how to check the concrete and what to look for before you start your concrete finishing process. Starting too early or too late can have a big impact on how hard you have to work and how good or bad the final outcome is.
