Multi-read content how to paint bird house

This post shares all about how to paint an aviary that will go well with your modern holiday decor! You can use it as a cool element of your indoor or outdoor holiday decor because it is both beautiful and functional! This post is sponsored by DecoArt and was originally posted on bybrittanygoldwyn.com.

For this month’s DecoArt Core Blogger Program, I’m tackling the always-on topic of how to draw an aviary! I’ve wanted a nice modern aviary in our garden for a while. We have a feeder and a ton of birds that the cats love to watch.

We also have birds that are constantly trying to nest under our balconies, so why not give them a home to use instead? The judgment is whether they use it or not. And if they don’t use it, here’s the problem: it’s also really cute for Christmas decorations.

I love the look of painted, unfinished vacation homes, so I made sure to paint this opulent split-level aviary using colors meant for modern vacations: black, hunter blue, and light gray. It will be the perfect addition to a mantle, table top or decoration for your outdoor stay.

  • DecoArt Americana Black Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic
  • Americana Acrylic in Dove Gray
  • Americana Acrylics in Hauser Dark Green
  • DecoArt DuraClear Satin Varnish
  • small brush
  • tissue paper and pallet or plastic bag

And here’s how to draw an aviary.

Step 1: Paint the face of the birdhouse

I’ll share a bit about the different paints I used for this project as I go along. It can be confusing when you go to the store and try to choose the right acrylic paint, so hope this helps.

For the side of my house, I used Dove Gray from the Americana Premium Matte Acrylics line. I chose this color because it reminds me of Dove Beige from the Americana Decor Satin Enamels line, which is the perfect light gray. Very neutral with very few blue tones, which is what I like about grey. (Here are a few projects I’ve used Dove Beige on:painted tree trunk, painted ceramic vase.)

theHigh quality matte acryliccomes in 257 ready-to-use shades that provide excellent coverage on virtually any surface. Finishes are permanent and durable, designed for professional artists and hobbyists alike. They are water-based and non-toxic, so you can use soap and water for a simple cleanup while the paint is still wet.

Here are some tips for using DecoArt Premium Matte Acrylics:

  • Only a small amount should be sprayed at a time; acrylics dry quickly.
  • You can combine the colors for custom shadows if you like.
  • You can use masking tape or masking tape to create patterns or hard edges on projects. If the paint you are applying the tape to is completely dry, the tape will cause no damage.
  • These coats will last approximately 5-7 years. Wondering if they’re bad? They are always good if you can remix them by shaking/stirring.
  • Drying time depends on temperature, humidity and thickness. These paints typically dry to the touch in 15 minutes.
  • You can also use varnish in a variety of sheens to finish the finish.
  • They can be used on metal, glass or fabric if you use the right medium. Arrival
  • painting on metal
  • or glass, first with a sealing machine. For fabrics, use a canvas painting medium then place the iron on to dry the design.

Step 2: Paint the roof and sides of the aviary

I chose to paint the roof, back and bottom of the aviary black. Specifically, I used Black Tie fromMulti-surface premium satin acrylicsline. This paint is also very easy to use but there are a few differences I would like to point out.

These premium satin acrylics are good for indoor and outdoor use, so I think they will be perfect for most birdhouses. Including the roof, this will probably take most of the cost as far as elements go.

These paints work effectively on almost any surface, including most plastics. They are self-sealing and require no primer, clearcoat or topcoat. This is an all-in-one acrylic paint that gives you great durability in just 1-2 coats depending on color and application. If that’s important to you, they’re also acid-free, water-based, and non-toxic.

paint bottles and some paint on a plastic baggie with a brush

Here are some tips for using DecoArt’s premium acrylic satin:

  • The paint has excellent self-leveling, but you can help achieve a super smooth finish by using a soft brush or high quality sponge.
  • It takes about a week to air dry; If you want a dishwasher-safe surface finish, paint on an oven-safe surface, place the dried pieces in a cold oven, set the temperature to 325 degrees F, bake for 30 minutes, then let cool in the door oven partially open. .
  • However, this paint is not intended for items that will come into direct contact with food.
  • On smooth surfaces, do not apply pressure with a brush; The paint will slip too much.
  • You can use a cosmetic sponge to dab the paint onto the surfaces to make them look like an eggshell. You can then layer different colors for a dimensional look.

Step 3: Do the detailed work!

ReturnHigh quality matte acrylic… I used Hauser Dark Green for the detail work. This means cut sides and pieces on the front of the birdhouse. I used a small brush and needed two coats of paint for this.

Step 4: Paint the DecoArt DuraClear varnish

As I noted in the description of each paint, Premium Acrylic Satin is self-sealing and does not require a topcoat for additional protection. They are equally good for indoor and outdoor use.

However, since I used Premium Matte acrylics on some parts of the aviary, I decided to cover the whole thing with DecoArt’sDuraClear Varnishin satin. I have found that the extra layer of protection will not harm the premium acrylic satin.

DuraClear Varnish is a non-yellowing, brushable, water-based polyurethane varnish for interior and exterior use that provides a clear, quick-drying, hard-wearing gloss finish. They are also available in matte, super matte, soft touch, gloss and gloss finishes. As well as fun glitter endings. Apply with a large flat brush.
