Multi-read content how to clean a silver tray

Silver trays can be beautiful. The delicately etched designs make it the centerpiece of almost any tabletop style. But what do you do when those silver platters get tarnished? You can run out and buy expensive silverware cleaners, or you can use a few that you probably already have in your own kitchen. Silver tray dealers around the world are using these little DIY tips and tricks to keep their silverware looking good without spending a fortune.

Dishwasher soap

You can remove light tarnish simply by soaking the tray in warm (not hot) water combined with standard dish soap. You only need a few drops, so don’t overdo it or you risk damaging the tray. Make sure the soap is also completely diluted in water. Then soak the tray, remove it and dry it with a soft cloth.

Aluminum foil and baking soda

One of the easiest waysAntique Silver Plating Cleaning MethodThe tray includes four basic ingredients from your kitchen. All you need is a teaspoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of salt, a sheet of aluminum foil, and two cups of boiling water. Use aluminum foil to line pots, baking dishes, or even sinks. Mix baking soda, salt and hot water. Then add to your silver platter. Let it sit for a minute or two, then carefully remove it with kitchen tongs. Much, if not all, of the dull color will transfer from the tray to the foil!

Ketchup

While some people don’t like this method, others like ketchup. Simply dab some of this spice on a paper towel and rub gently on tarnished areas of your antique sterling silver tray. You might be surprised at the amount of tarnish that appears! For very tarnished trays, you can leave the ketchup on for about 15 minutes. You can also use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean between stained teeth. Rinse the tray with warm water and dry with a soft cloth once you have removed the tarnish.

Corn flour

Another common kitchen ingredient that you can use to clean tarnished silver platters is cornstarch. Mix a little cornstarch with water to make a paste. Then apply this mixture on the dull skin and let it dry. Once it’s done, use a towel or cheesecloth to rub it off. If cornstarch is not available, you can use cream of tartar.

Lime Soda

Another common item you can use to clean up your items before showing them to potential peoplesilver tray buyeris any lime soda. You can leave your tray in this bowl of soda for about an hour. Then take out the tray and wash it. A large amount of tarnish will come off immediately. Dry the tray with a soft cloth and you are ready to sell.
