6 hallway decorating ideas you can do yourself to add excitement to your art prints without a boring space outside the window to get rid of on the cheap.

Here’s the reality: When wemoving into this house for the first timeand after visiting it during our house hunting, our upstairs hallway wasn’t exactly on my priority list.

I mean…it’s a hallway. He took us from A to B. Nothing to write home about. (Har har…accidental pun.)

But we walk our halls about 80 billion times a day (just a slight exaggeration), so why?Won’t dowe give him some love?

This is where it all started when we moved in two years ago.

A lot of things are happening. And also a whole beige color.

Now it shakes that look:

And now:

Doesn’t it get so much better?! I can’t tell the difference! The paint color alone makes this space much airier and brighter.

And it really doesn’t take much effort to make it all fun. If you’re tired of hallways, here’s how to handle some hallway decorating ideas.

6 hallway decorating ideas to update a boring hallway:

1. Add interesting lighting

Replace boring light fixtures with aMore sophisticated flush mountingAlso helps a little. For ceilings 10′ or more, choose pendant lights.

2. Throw in a tree or two as hallway decorations

I identify as a black thumb, so I’m going the pseudo-veg route, butthis list of indoor plantsthere are tons of ideas for ideas you can put in your hallway with little to no sunlight.

I swept that awayartificial fig leavesfrom our living room because we feel more at home than in this corner. And thatartificial potted plantsI’m stuck on mineDIY piano standlooks like the real thing even in close-up.

If you have space, incorporate a small console instead of a plant stand.

3. Paint your door to create a contrast to decorate the hallway

Since wepaint all our interior doorsBenjamin Moore wrought iron, I don’t even regret it for a second! It made all of our rooms so much more upscale for the cost of paint alone.

This narrow hallway has a va-va-voom element simply because the door’s color change takes center stage.

4. Hang large format paintings to deceive the eye

The larger your artwork, the less cluttered your hallway will be. Ever since we hung up these free architectural prints, it’s brought this side of our hallway together.

5. Take out a runner

We have addedthis runneranother day to add textures and patterns to this space, and now it’s so comfortable to be here! I put this mat underneath to keep it from slipping and sliding on our hardwood floors. As far as possible!

6. Go super light or super dark with paint.

Choose very light paint colors to create a bright and open feel, or choose very dark colors if you want your small hallway to feel cozy.

I like to pick a higher or lower color on the paint swatch strips for a clean, dramatic effect in a small space. For added drama, paint the ceiling the same color as the walls to draw the eye upward and visually expand a small space.

Choosing medium shades can sometimes make a windowless space appear flat.

For our walls this round, we painted them classic Benjamin Moore Gray. It’s a very light warm gray that works in all types of light without any of the weird green or purple hues.

We’re still planning on dealing with the ceiling a bit more to get rid of the likely attic fan that hasn’t been used in decades, but we’ll cross that bridge eventually.

And that bathroom hidden behind the closed door slammed in the middle of that hallway? It looks SO CRAZY I CAN’T STAND! More on that then. Now you can seeThe progress of this major renovation is here.
