How to remove wax from furniture with mineral spirits

Mineral starch (also known as white spirit) is a complete solvent for almost anything. It is effective in dissolving old wax from waxed furniture but will not harm cured polyurethane varnishes.

Dip a soft cotton cloth in mineral water, then wipe the wax off the surface. Use extra mineral oil and the fabric is cleaner as wax builds up and browns the fabric.

This helps you remove the most wax from the surface. You can also use a scouring pad or fine steel wool instead of the cloth.

Apply a small amount of mineral oil to the waxed surface, then rub it clean. These abrasive options along with mineral spirits will help break down the wax and separate it from the wood.

Lightly dampen a new cloth with clean water, then wipe the surface.

How to remove wax paste from furniture with wax

Use this method on freshly waxed and not so dry surfaces. It works better that way.

Apply a thin layer of wax over the wax you wish to remove. The new wax will soften existing stains on your furniture, making them easier to remove.

Use a clean rag to wipe the softened wax from your wood surface before it dries again.

Remember not to let the wax dry before removing it: you will then end up with a thicker and more complex layer of wax on your furniture.

You can also use sandpaper to rub off the liquid wax, then wipe away the wood dust with a damp cloth.
