Multi-read content how to make furniture look old

There are special techniques for giving an antique look to freshly painted furniture. To make the furniture today, I actually used a combination of techniques. I paint the trunk, use a hard polisher, use ink to weather the paint, then finish with a dark wax.

How to make new furniture look old

I started with this drawer a few days ago and finished it yesterday. It can really be done in a day if you don’t have a lot of errands to run or something like that.

the5 steps to painting antique furnitureor forgive an old look to painted furniturevery easy, really easy. The whole process can be completed in a day or two depending on the type of paint used. I list 5 steps here with detailed instructions and pictures.

How do you age painted furniture?

Step 1.Choose the right paint.

When I say the right paint color, I’m really referring to a glossy finish. Flat or matte finishes are best suited to glossy finishes. Satin or eggshell can also be used with slightly different results. The glossier finish will not absorb the ink or wax we use to make furniture look old. The brand or type of paint does not matter.

I’ve used Caromal Colors Texture Paint, Reclaim Beyond Paint, Behr Rubber Flat Paint, and Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint on items I’ve made since time immemorial. I wouldn’t suggest using chalk paint as it really sticks to old products and looks too dark. This process usually involves applying ink or some kind of enamel and wiping it off to get the right aging or neck. With chalk paint, once the paint has penetrated the ink powder, it is very difficult to wipe it off.

The Reclaim paint has a bit of a sheen to it and looks very old fashioned, but I prefer the flatter look of the other paints. I’m definitely not saying these are the only paint options to achieve the perfect vintage look. These are the ones I used.

furniture project before Petticoat Junktion

This is the part before painting. I got this trunk at….you guessed it……My favorite snack. I think I paid $40 for it and just had to do some minor repairs.

I used Caromal Colors Paint for this project. It is trademarked by Country Living and the color is Peppercorn (black). I love this paint color. It’s really thick and you can roll it thin or thick for a country texture. Paint is made to stick to everything. It is ideal for painted cabinets. A black marklatex paintwith a flat shade would also be a great paint choice.

I put a coat of paint on my chest. When I’m playing with something, I don’t worry about painting every piece of furniture. Why waste paint….I’ll remove a lot later! Of course it’s only painPainted furniture gives an old lookalso.

Step 3. Disrupt painting.

Sure, just painting a piece of furniture makes it look old and you can stop there, but we’ll take it a step further. I use 60 or 80 grit sandpaper and use an electric sander to size the entire piece. The lower the amount of sandpaper, the coarser the grit and the more the paint will flake off. I usually use 100 or 150 for the paint to smash. The crazy grey/white look will go away…trust me.

paint after distressing Petticoat Junktion

A drawer after a mourning. Yes, it looks hard but it will be fine. I call this the pained heavy look.

Step 4. Apply toner.

*Important. Wait for the paint to harden at least 24 hours or possibly 3-4 days depending on the paint used. If the paint hasn’t dried long enough when you apply the toner and wipe it off, some of the paint may be lost. The Caromal Colors paint I used dries to a hard finish that really clings to furniture surfaces. I just waited a few hours before applying toner on this patch.

How to apply Caromal Colors toner:

I use a cheap chip brush to brush off the ink. In the photo above, the ink is applied only to the front of the drawer. I apply the toner evenly then wipe it off with a dry towel. Dry towels leave a lot of ink. To remove most of the ink, I use a damp cloth. The more ink left on the furniture, the longer the paint will last. Removing several coats of ink will make the furniture look a bit dated.

On black or dark paint, it really doesn’t make much difference. On white paint, more toner will show up, so a damp cloth will work best. I have a complete guide onthe ink is there. Wait until the ink is completely dry before proceeding to step 5.

Step 5. Apply a layer of dark wax to make

When the ink dries, I apply a layerHoward’s Waxwith Golden Oak or Walnut with a lint-free cloth. The old plates are perfect! The wax dries for about 15 minutes then I polish it with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Everything has been done!

You can age the paint simply by using one of the products, black ink or wax. The wax gives the paint a nice color, so I always try to use it instead of ink. Find a project here where I just used Howards Black Wax…How to easily make antique furniture
