How To Wash An Electric Blanket

Photo: istockphoto.com

Cleaning electric blankets can seem intimidating, even dangerous. Mix water with electricity? No thanks. But an electric blanket should be washed monthly, before it’s put away, and whenever it’s dirty to keep it soft and cozy — it’s time to stop pretending you haven’t noticed that stain. cream and learn how to wash it off.

Chris Galas, Marketing Director ofSunlight, a major manufacturer of electric blankets, was on hand to help unravel the process. His first guarantee: it really isn’t as difficult — or as dangerous — as you might think!

“Despite the natural instinct to separate water and electricity, it’s a common misconception that washing electric blankets can compromise safety,” says Galas. “The biggest concern is not that the blanket will catch fire or give you an electric shock, but that you are actually damaging the heating elements by using harsh chemicals, high temperatures, or drying techniques that will result in pinching or power cord deformation,” says Galas. With that in mind, we’ve come up with three different (equally safe) methods for washing electric blankets.

Local treatment

You aresnuggled up on the sofaUnder your electric blanket, enjoy hot drinks and… the spills happen. Here’s how to treat local stains without having to wash the entire blanket.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
-Butter knife (optional)
-Soft white fabric (2)
-Drink water
-Mild fabric detergent

STEP 1

Before treating the stain, be sure to remove the cover. Once it is safely off, gently remove excess debris (or if you wait too long, hard) using a fingernail or butter knife.

2ND STEP

Dip a white cloth in water and add a little mild detergent to the fabric. Rub gently on the stain until the stain comes out and transfers to the cloth. Once you’ve removed as much of the stain as possible, rinse it out.

STEP 3

Dip the second cloth in clean water, then gently rub the area to remove the detergent. Repeat this operation until there is no more detergent.

STEP 4

Flatten the heating blanket and let it air dry completely before using it again. Do not fold or crease bedding when dry to avoid cutting or damaging internal electrical cords.

Machine wash

If you have a lot of stains or your electric blanket just needs cleaning, you can put it inwasher and dryer. Just use it for a short time and set it to be as cool as possible to ensure the cord is not damaged during use.

Is your blanket too big to fit in your machine? Do not take it to the laundromat as these machines get too hot. See below how to wash an electric blanket by hand.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
– Washing machine
– Clothes dryer
– Mild fabric detergent
– Laundry rack

STEP 1

Remove your electric blanket from the heater controller according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2ND STEP

Put the blanket in the washing machine, add detergent and fill the tub with cold water. Before running a cycle, soak the blanket for 10 minutes so that the water and detergent can soak into the fabric.

STEP 3

After 10 minutes, select the gentle cycle or gentle mode and allow the wringer to dry.

STEP 4

Put your electric blanket in the dryer and choose the coolest setting possible. Let the blanket dry gently for 10 minutes and also watch the machine to make sure it doesn’t overheat as this is one of the biggest dangers for electrical cords.

STEP 5

Take the blanket out while still damp and let it air dry completely. Avoid bending it on the clothesline and don’t use clothespins, as they can pinch the cords and damage them; You’d better spread the electric blanket on the dryer.

Hand washing

If you don’t have a washer and dryer at home, that’s okay. Follow these steps for how to hand wash an electric blanket.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
– Large plastic bins
– Mild fabric detergent
– Laundry rack

STEP 1

Remove your electric blanket from the heater controller according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2ND STEP

Place the blanket in a plastic container or tub, add mild detergent and fill with cold water. Leave to soak for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

STEP 3

Drain the tub and gently wring the electric blanket to remove excess water, being careful not to trap the power cord.

STEP 4

Hang the blanket to drycompletely. Avoid bending it over the clothesline and again, skip the clothespin. You wouldn’t want your electric blanket to survive in water and suffer real damage from its cord getting caught with a clothespin.
