The efficiency of HEPA filters really starts to decrease for particles closer to 0.3uM, which is why they are rated as “99.97% of particles down to 0.3uM”. Filters actually work even better on this size (as shown in the graph, like 5uM).

By following the red line on the graph, you can see that the performance (the number of particles it can capture) drops off a bit near a certain size range.

Interestingly, filters actually trapthatparticles below this size range, but it would be misleading to sell a filter based on this range.

Minimum particle size is important

thethe smallest particle size the filter can remove from the airis the most important thing to know. In the case of a genuine (real) HEPA filter, you can be sure it is 0.3 µM (less than 1 millionth of a meter).

“HEPA-type” filters are those that look like real HEPA filters but do not meet the same requirements. They are not standardized and can have any range of efficiency and minimum particle size.

HEPA purifiers are sold to give buyers the impression that they are getting the same performance when in reality, who knows? Unless the specs are specifically clarified, anyone’s guess.

There is no requirement for companies selling such things to have proof of the performance of their products.

In some cases, HEPA type filters can allow allergens, dust mite particles and the like to escape! This is because some of the most common airborne particles that cause people problems are smaller than they can handle.

In this case, you will need to be fully trained in the particle sizes that your air issues include. I would definitely not recommend a HEPA type filter for smoke, airborne bacteria and other issues.

For example, smoke particles have been shown to be measurable to less than 1 micron.

Honestly, this kind of information is not for the average person and in my opinion there is too much room to make poor buying decisions.

If your budget is tight and your air issues aren’t too demanding, this is an option to consider.

Since they look so similar, you can’t rely on your eyes alone. As I mentioned earlier, due to clever marketing, you might be fooled into thinking that HEPA type purifiers are just as good as the real thing.

They are not.
